Mundka, located in West Delhi, is a traditional village that has seen significant transformation over the years. Positioned along National Highway 10, commonly known as Rohtak Road, Mundka has shifted from its agrarian roots to a semi-urban landscape. Rapid industrialization and the development of residential colonies have led to the conversion of much of its farmland into factories and housing. This pattern of urbanization is also visible in nearby villages such as Nangloi Jat and Bakkarwala.

A key cultural landmark in the area is the revered Dada Bhero Mandir, a temple widely known for its spiritual importance in the region. The village gained further prominence in 2009 with the extension of the Delhi Metro, which improved connectivity and contributed to infrastructure development and local commerce.

The origin of the name ‘Mundka’ is traced back to the Sanskrit word Muṇḍa (मुण्ड), meaning “head.” Local legends associate it with the epic tale of Shishupala’s beheading by Lord Krishna, claiming that his severed head landed in a nearby pond, still referred to as Shishupal or Shishuwala.

Mundka has been home to several influential political personalities. Dr. Sahib Singh Verma Lakra was a respected leader who served as Delhi’s Chief Minister, Member of Parliament, and Union Labour Minister. His legacy continues through his son, Parvesh Verma Lakra, who has served both as an MP and as a minister in the Delhi government. Siddharth Sahib Singh Lakra, also from the same family, is associated with the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA). Other notable figures include Master Azad Singh Lakra, former Mayor and MCD Councillor; Dharampal Lakra, former MLA; Anil Lakra, MCD Councillor (2017); and Diwan Singh, a committed environmentalist.

Yet, despite having representation across all levels of government—chief minister, MPs, MLAs, and councillors from the same village—Mundka still struggles with basic civic amenities. Poor infrastructure persists, with roads often submerged in knee-deep water during rains, highlighting the gap between political and on-ground development.
