Choreographed by the Other - 2016During her artist-in-residence at “Het Vijfde Seizoen” in 2015, located within the psychiatric institution Willem Arntsz Hoeve (Den Dolder, NL), Nina Glockner established a dialogue with one patient investigating the communicative potential of performative and game practices and their ability to disrupt a given power balance.Under the title “Choreographed by the Other”, between 2015 and 2017, she realized a series of objects, video-encounters, performances as well as this publication that all traced and challenged the tension between subjectivity and top-down systems of control. For the 2025 Joop Swart Masterclass, we joined forces with Ayumi Higuchi @ayhgnl to create a publication featuring the amazing work of this year’s mentees.Over two intense (and very creative!) days, we worked with each participant on their edit, shaping a publication that not only showcases their powerful stories but can also function as an exhibition. It was such a pleasure collaborating with all the participants: @ameenakaseem @amina.kadous @le_veneque @chiara.apellido @gabzyn @idjamil @luis.antonio.rojas @maenster @masoome_bahramii @maiheartandsoul @saher_alghorra @sumi_anjuman @theromakepeand the amazing World Press Photo team! @worldpressphoto Photo 2 © Noor Chehabeddine by @ayhgnl

Last month, I had the great pleasure and honour of working with this year’s winners of World Press Photo during our workshops on printed matter!Together with Ayumi Higuchi, our goal was to inspire photographers to explore different formats for publishing their work, and to offer insight into how to approach publication-making from both editorial and design perspectives.Thank you, Mercedes Almagro Ocana, for inviting us, and thanks to all the participants for the insightful conversations!© Maarten Nauw@worldpressphoto @ayhgnl by @ayhgnl
