One year sober.

I am very proud of me. A year ago, I made the decision to stop drinking because I realized that it no longer served me. I am no longer the person who needs a drink to decompress after a long day. Who needs a drink to bury frustration and grief. Who needs a drink to socialize. I set the thermostat on my life and the spaces that I inhabit. Through this journey I have learned how to sit with my feelings, navigate them, and release them. I no longer have the social anxiety that I used to have going out, which would require me to hit the bar just to jumpstart.

I have mastered the “Irish Goodbye” now which extends beyond being outside. I now leave spaces and people that no longer align with me. My thoughts are a lot clearer and I just genuinely feel better about myself. I am thankful to my family and friends who have supported this change.

After doing this for a year, I can do difficult things and make necessary sacrifices. For the betterment of myself. I have not pinpointed my next change but I do look forward to taking on that challenge.

I have never made a Father’s Day post for my dad. Because I am usually sitting in silence grieving what we never had. About a year or so ago I made the decision to forgive my father’s absence and heal. That has helped my mental health and to finally free myself of the anger that I kept bottled up for so long. So instead of being bitter, I have exchanged my emotions for gratitude. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be able to experience the love of my Mother, sister, and grandmother. I wouldn’t be able to experience the joys of life. While you weren’t able to give me a lot in this life you gave me a contagious smile and the biggest gift which is life. I have a chance to one day be the father to my children that you weren’t able to be for me. So I thank you for that Dad. I know you’re no longer on this earth with me, but I truly hope that I am making you somewhat proud. I love and appreciate you pops. Happy Father’s Day. by @aymrwilson
