Took me a few days to find the words about my favorite Uncle. I still don’t have the words. So let me tell you about three very prominent memories that I have of my Uncle Byron.

The first was when my father married my Evil Stepmother (Every real Princess 👸🏾 must have one, it’s part of our Villain origin story.) I was about 12-13 years old. My father promised me he would NEVER remarry after my Mother, it was a verbal promise to a then 11 year old little girl. A promise that he broke.
The day of the wedding my Uncle Byron saw that I was visibly upset. He pulled me to the side and asked me if I wanted him to slit the tires on their car? It made me smile.
The second was when the creepy caucasian man at the end of my block got my name and address from the equally creepy caucasian Mailman and wrote me a VERY inappropriate letter asking me to come to his home for wine. I was 14. Uncle Byron, my dad, my mom, and I all went to the police station. Of course nothing was done, so uncle Byron and my dad promptly went to the creepy mans door. When he opened it …..I don’t know what was said as I was standing back with my mom. What I do know for sure is that my uncle Byron most DEFINITELY had his gun on him and that man never said another word or sent another letter and not long after that he moved. Always very protective of his nieces!!! I remember him letting me borrow ALLLLLL of his Luther Vandross cd’s so that I could upload them to my iTunes when I was in my 20’s. Every time I hear a Luther Vandross song I think of my uncle.
The last time I saw him physically was when my dad was in the hospital. We talked and laughed. My Uncle was extremely funny. Most people were scared of him, he had a very intimidating presence. I was never scared of him. I loved him. Uncle Byron rest well. Please tell my Mom, and Dad Hi for me. 🕊️💜🙏🏽 by @aynahs

I said to Letty last week “I wonder where Joey is? I haven’t heard from him or seen him post in a long time?!” Today I went on FB which I rarely do, and saw that it was your Birthday! I posted for you and something said scroll down, I had a sinking feeling as if I knew what I was going to find. ( I have had this exact thing happen to me before with my friend Theo) as I scrolled I saw a message the read “Happy Heavenly Birthday” my heart sank. How did I (once again) not know, how did I miss this? The last time we spoke in DMs was exactly 9 days before you passed away. Much like Theo, we were the type of friends that didn’t speak all the time, but when we did it was as if no time had passed. We kept planing to get together as we both lived in LA. I had every intention of coming to see you perform. We only knew one another because of an ex mutual friend of ours. The best thing they did was bring us together, even if only for a short time. Thank you for always being so supportive of me Joey. Thank you for always making me laugh. Thank you for always being so kind. I wish we had more time so we could have gotten to know each other better. You will be missed. My heart goes out to everyone who knew you and loved you. @joeysalinas
