The Initial Meeting | June 3, 2023

I tried to kick him out!
True story. It was my dear friend’s birthday party, and he had wandered into the backroom where we were celebrating. I asked who he knew at the function, and he blankly replied, “No one.” No one!? I hope my face didn’t scrunch up the way I have been known to, but I asked him to leave. I was the riff raff handler! But he didn’t go away. He laughed and stayed...Thank God!
We chatted at the bar, then I introduced him to six of my girlfriends to whom I KNOW I slyly gave the “he’s cute” glance. The music was a playlist of songs we grew up to, so of course, we slow danced a la 7th-grade social. Before he left, he looked at me and said, “Well, Ms. Jackson, I have to get your phone number so I can take you on a date.” I again hope that my face did not give way to how amazing the night was, how cool I thought he was, and how surprised that he formally (to my face) asked me out.
Well, we did go out on that date, and he brought me a beautiful bouquet of herbs from his garden! Almost two years later, though I am tending to said garden alongside him, Leon continues to be a true gentleman. I feel so blessed to have met a man with whom I can joke and build a future with.

This weekend my family celebrated our FAMILY REUNION. I don’t have many pictures (because I was the DJ) but I’m glad that someone snapped this photo of me, my mom, and sister @nickyrozay99

My cousin Joi @bird_eleven designed the event with a swag bag that I will be using non-stop with our theme of KINDRED written on it.

My other cousin digitized old video footage in which I could see clearly for the first time great grand parents and great-great grandparents. It was surreal.

We weathered the #ATL heat and rain and had a wonderful time. I can’t wait to see all my cousins, aunts and uncles and parents again.

🍉WATERMELON 🍉

I looked out of my window yesterday and The Watermelon Man had pulled up. I went outside and got literally the biggest one!

Watermelons are a symbol of Black entrepreneurship. Black people post Civil War grew & sold watermelons…and as you guessed it b/c some people don’t want us to be great made it a stereotype and caricature.

I yielded 3 bottles of super hydrating watermelon juice that I gave away to friends. by @ayojaneen

So four Black people walk into a book signing... @joyannreid, @dont.b.ashy, @pelzerprojects, @tiffanydcross , what’s the first thing they say? 😂

I had the absolute honor of being a vendor at the Brunch Bites & Book event celebrating @tiffanydcross and her book Love, Me: A Letter to Black Women in a Toxic Country, Career, and Relationship moderated by the incomparable @joyannreid. The conversation was rich, the room was full, and the table? Baby, the table was SET!

None of this happens without a village:

Thank you Nina at Eaton House @eatonhotel.dc for the beautiful space and the warm welcome. Thank you Rumunda of Mahogany Books @mahoganybooks for creating the kind of literary community that makes events like this possible. Thank you to every single volunteer who showed up and kept it all moving.

And Tiffany Cross 🙏🏾 I am so grateful for this connection. Your story, your energy, your grace. Thank you for letting Don’t B. Ashy be part of your moment. 🖤

And my husband… chile. He loaded the car, drove me to DC, let me be full passenger princess so I could breathe and get myself together — and then helped set up everything with love and zero complaints. 🤍

Nine years of building something from scratch, and weekends like this remind me exactly why.

Oooooo baby bay!
I had the fortunate experience of meeting a brilliant thinker, journalist, and author. I have been following Tiffany Cross @tiffanydcross for years and as luck would have it Don’t B. Ashy @dont.b.ashy was asked to create VIP boxes for her book launch!

Get her book on sale now. It is a a mostly autobiographical account followed up with historical #receipts so the information not only touched but stung as it she exposes the shared trauma of being a Black woman in America.
