Well…Kodiak is beautiful!!😳
I met up with my dear friend and sharer of dreams, Selah at a coffeehouse near the dock, and we bombarded each other with overlapping, intertwined visions for working together in the future. She was telling me about a woodworking artist/mentor, David, so we decided to show up at his house unannounced. What a warm and rich connection! David and his wife, Bonnie are amazing human beings, and I expect that we’ll be connecting over traditional hand craft in the future.
I managed to speed-visit the Aleutiq Museum to study Sugpiaq bow details before hustling back to the Tustamena.
As I rushed back onboard, I was happily surprised to see my fellow traditional qayaq builder and friend Lou, who just happened to be taking the trip out through the chain with a couple of friends. Lou has been doing some very fine work in Juneau, and we’re talking about getting together to pursue and expand upon his qayaq roots(Inupiaq - Wales, Alaska), maybe for a stint in Ferndale at Mind’s Eye Manufactory! taken in Kodiak, Alaska by @ayuxtam

Pulling in to Kodiak aboard the Tustamena, the beloved “Trusty Tusty”. She was launched in 1964, and I was launched in ‘63. We’re both classics. taken in Kodiak, Alaska by @ayuxtam

The past few days have been packed with travel, chores, fast problem solving, and non-stop motion, but I find myself now onboard the Tustamena, kicking back on the deck watching the Homer Spit disappear behind us in the gorgeous evening sun. We’re heading to Kodiak Island first. I’m excited about seeing that island for my first time, and about reconnecting with my friend and boatbuilding student, Selah there tomorrow.

I flew to Homer early yesterday morning and then drove a truck and trailer three and a half hours to Seward to pick up a stack of beautiful 20 foot Sitka spruce planks from Josh at @precisiontimberworks. Josh never fails to mill us perfect spruce and yellow cedar planks for our iqyan and uluxtan projects! I got to spend the night in Seward’s historic and wonderfully haunted Van Gilder Hotel…no “visits” to report. 🤨
But in the morning I got a good visit in with my iqyax̂ cohort, Dustin at the wonderful @resurrect.art before hitting the road back to Homer. Back in Homer I made the great discovery of @zendencafe and the super cool owners,Tyler and Sierra. Whenever I’m traveling I’m sure to be scoping around for inspiration for our own @mindseyecoffee …and this place is definitely inspiring!
Before running out of time and rushing off for the TustamenaI had the pleasure of reconnecting with my dear friends Joan and Doug, and Joan’s son Sam over Thai food.
I’m just feeling so grateful for the amazing, kind people I know up in these parts and for this strange and wonderful life that allows me to visit them! taken in Kenai Peninsula by @ayuxtam

Just one day before leaving for a month of boatbuilding in the Aleutians I’m scrambling to meet my obligations and the needs of my customers. Today: design a water dam for my self sufficient off-grid friend/client, Jim..and get it built…100 feet up a ravine. Tools, rebar, redwood, and twelve sacks of concrete muscled up the ravine by this old man. And voila! My buddy Jim will have the water he needs!
Now…time to pack fo Alaska!! by @ayuxtam

From the imaginations and sketchpad drawings of Brian and Samira at @lost_coast_gardens, we were given the fun challenge of manifesting their vision with our human minds and hands (no AI!👊🏼) here at Mind’s Eye Manufactory.
After a week of long days wading through redwood shavings in the Manufactory we were able to deliver and install on time…barely! Leah and I were hanging the second gate at nine o’clock on the night before the grand opening celebration 😳 Whew!

The gates will be fitted with sky blue stained glass panels in the circle areas, and greenish earth-toned stained glass pyramid light shades on the posts. Stained glass work is being done by Artisan Alley’s Daniel Lawrence. Thanks, Dan! taken in Ferndale, California by @ayuxtam

Just when I really needed it…serendipity and wonder brought me so many affirmations in the past couple of days!
Yesterday began with a drop-in visit from my friend Martin and the brilliant innovator/visionary, John Phelps @fullsail. I hadn’t seen John in a few years and it was wonderful catching up. This is a man who has seen more of the world than I ever will, yet he felt compelled to impress upon me how much he appreciates the space we’ve created and the community that it draws in. Very affirming. I’m keeping that one!

The day continued as a series of rich, heartfelt conversations with great folks like artists Scotty Colin @scottsmanship and Andrei Hedstrom @andreihedstrom.

Later in the evening our next-door gallery, Redeye Laboratories @redeyelaboratories erupted into a “standing room only” three-way artist show for Shawn, Gryffin, and Grayce Griggs…with Maggie hosting!
The whole day seemed set to remind me that I’m on my right path! taken in Ferndale, California by @ayuxtam

What a celebration! It was a night of pure fun dancing to the thunderous music and fireballs of local artist-legend Duane Flatmo’s El Pulpo Magnifico!
Thanks for the party, Duane and crew, and the City of Eureka!

New bike for Lala! This is a sweet little 24” Specialized with hydraulic disc brakes. I believe in doing what it takes to give kids access to fine tools, musical instruments, and bicycles!
Huge shout-out and thank you to the wonderful folks at @adventuresedge for keeping our girls in great bikes all of these years! taken in Ferndale, California by @ayuxtam
