As 2024 drew to a close, I had to pause and celebrate my greatest achievement - becoming Dr. Azaria Cunningham-Smith. From that little girl who played teacher with my nieces & nephews in our green & white dollhouse in the front yard to walking across the stage at Penn State earning a PhD in Curriculum & Instruction - this dream was decades in the making. I couldn’t dare step into 2025 without honoring this moment, this journey, and this childhood dream turned reality. Thank you God 🙌🏾. To every Black girl who’s been told her dreams are too big: they’re not. Keep going!🎓✨. 📝 New publication: Co-authored with my best friends and colleagues Drs. Cunningham and Jackson @azaria_cunningham @jennyjay00 and published in TESOL Journal, our article presents findings from a workshop in an anti-racist teacher education course. We drew on raciolinguistic ideologies, anti-Black linguistic racism, and Extraordinary Pedagogies rooted in anti-bigotry praxes to develop a workshop that engaged white teacher candidates in interrogating Standard Academic English as a racialized norm that marginalizes Black multilingual learners. Our collaborative analysis of learning artifacts and classroom interactions demonstrates teacher candidates language attitudes shaped by native-speakerist ideologies and an emerging awareness of raciolinguistic tendencies. 🎓Our latest publication. 🎓Forget what you heard! The scholarship on Black Greek Letter Organizations tends to focus on the organizations broadly and do not center the unique experiences of Black sorority women through the lens of Black women sorority members. Here we employ Black Feminist Thought and Intersectionality Theory to curate this collective autoethnography, highlighting Black sorority life as a form of cultural wealth.

A gift and a pleasure to co-author with these brilliant women and sisters, representing all four D9 sororities.
