Some people think getting a therapist means having someone unbiased listen and be a blank slate. At the same time, I keep hearing people who have been to therapy starting to look for something more. They want a therapist who will be real with them. They want to be known. They want their therapist to fall apart with them as they share their hardest moments. They want someone to really be with them in the hard shit and the good shit.

Therapists too, like most of us, also feel the pressure of living in capitalism, under oppressive systems, trying to avoid burnout and toxic professionalism. But I believe in authenticity in relationships, where we get to actually show up as ourselves, therapist, and client. Human and Human. And it's here where connection begins to foster hope. Not just for the client, but for me too in getting to work and practice undoing colonial harm.

I am no master at all the things mentioned above, 3 years into my practice but I am learning that the mastery is not in always saying the right thing, but in caring for myself more deeply when I don't. This helps me stay present and be with my client's potential ruptures, so we can move through it.
