With the 2026 college football season upon us and Aztec kickoff a little over 24 hours away, I’ve shared my keys to what a successful 2026 season could look like for the San Diego State Aztecs football program, which funds itself and is in contention for the Pac-12 title and even a spot in the College Football Playoff if they run the table.

The Final Aztec Football Game at Qualcomm/SDCCU Stadium - A Retrospective

On November 30th, 2019, in the season finale, the 8-3 San Diego State Aztecs would battle the 7-4 Brigham Young Cougars, a former conference rival they hadn't beaten since 2005 and had lost 6 straight games to.

In many ways, this game would mark the end of an era for Aztec football, as the program would say goodbye to the stadium it had shared with the Chargers and Padres and had played in for 53 seasons. It would also be Rocky Long’s last regular-season game as head coach and the second-to-last Aztec football game of the 2010s.

The men in black and red would win 13-3, ending the losing streak, honoring their seniors, and giving SDCCU a proper goodbye.

AZTECS WIN🔴⚫

The San Diego State are 1-0 in PAC-12 play, courtesy of a thrilling 31-29 comeback win over the Texas State Bobcats!

THE GOOD ✅

The biggest spark came immediately after halftime when Jaylon Hawkins returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. From there, true freshman Josiah Lucas took over, finishing with 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Cameron Cooper may have been SDSU’s MVP. He blocked a field goal in the first half, then delivered the biggest play of the game with a 32-yard pick-six after Texas State had cut the lead to 24-22.

The defense also deserves credit despite allowing 565 yards. Texas State ran an incredible 102 plays and possessed the ball for 40:33, yet SDSU forced two interceptions, made a huge fourth-and-goal stop, and got a late Alijah Lash sack to help seal it.

With Javion Kinnard and Lucky Sutton out, Josiah Lucas responded with 21 carries, 111 yards, 5.3 yards per carry, and two touchdowns.

THE BAD ❌

SDSU finished with only 239 total yards, 52 plays, and 19:27 of possession. Fourteen of its 31 points came directly from a kickoff return and pick-six.

Jayden Denegal protected the football, going 15-for-23 with no interceptions, but threw for only 109 yards and averaged 4.7 yards per attempt. The passing game still isn’t creating enough explosive plays.

The slow starts are also becoming a serious issue. SDSU has now struggled offensively in the first half for several consecutive games and trailed 17-3 at halftime here.

The fourth-quarter safety was another ugly mistake that nearly changed the game before Cooper bailed the Aztecs out.

This was not a complete performance. The Aztecs cannot consistently win while being outgained 565-239 and asking their defense to play 102 snaps.

That said, I'm so proud of this team for how they handled the adversity of the mumps outbreak, key injuries, being down 17-3 at halftime, and rallying to win this game. What a magical night and return for PAC-12 After Dark!
