I'm literally crying right now 🥲🥲🥲🥲

On September 10, 2026, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Luna was on a family vacation in Yellowstone National Park. Her family left her in a cabin with a do-not-disturb sign while they went out to explore the park. In what they believe was an accident, a housekeeper opened the cabin door and Luna bolted. Staff chased her for over two hours before the owners returned and discovered their dog was missing.

The family searched, but were told it was likely Luna had died or been eaten by a coyote. Days after they left Yellowstone, they got a call: Luna had been spotted. They contacted Katie Boucher, president of the Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center in Norris, Montana.

For the next month, Boucher and a team of volunteers tracked Luna across the park. They had a secret weapon: Luna's past. Before she was adopted, Luna spent the first year of her life surviving on the streets of California. "She does not need people and she knows it," Boucher said. Those street skills resurfaced in Yellowstone. She knew how to hide, find food, and avoid danger.

Boucher's team set humane traps using the scent of Luna's family, since using food could attract bears. They worked with the National Park Service, which granted them special permission and a trapping permit. Construction crews allowed them into restricted areas. The team tracked sightings—Luna was seen crossing intersections, sneaking into lodges through automatic doors, and retracing her family's steps from the day she was lost.

On October 14, 2026, 34 days after she vanished, they got her. "We got her!" Boucher texted. "We are on the way to the vet with her." Luna was found healthy and without injuries. She is now reunited with her family. A ten-year-old dog survived a month in one of the wildest places in America. And she did it on her own terms.
