Last Friday, we presented Azul Espirito Santo's artist book, which she created during her February residency in the studio and hand made in the weeks that followed. The book became a way to hold and share more of the research that informs her practice.

In preparation for the show, Azul spent time in the Aguajal, a peatland forest in the Amazon. There, she stayed with ‬the‭ ‬Shipibo-Konibo‭ ‬Indigenous community‭, ‬who live with the land and for the land along the river basin‭.

She met Leonida, who introduced her to the Shipibo Kené‭ textile tradition and shared knowledge of local healing plants, that later found their way into the titles of works and the exhibition: Matico and Ceiba pentandra. Matico (spiked pepper) is known for its tension between care and control‭, ‬existing both as a medicinal ally and an ecological disruptor‭, ‬shaped by human movement and‭ ‬extraction‭. Ceiba pentrandra, known as the tree of wisdom and spiritual authority‭, carries a soft‭, ‬lightweight fiber commonly known as‭ ‬kapok‭ inside its fruit.‬‭

Both ‬reflect a broader question of value‭: ‬how certain materials become overlooked‭, ‬rediscovered or recontextualised‭. ‬They suggest another way of engaging with the forest‭: one grounded not in use, ‬but in attentive coexistence‭.‬

"This book turned into a quest to gather an intentional‭ ‬compendium‭ ‬of plant species and flora‭, ‬without following a strict scientific approach‭. ‬Instead‭, ‬I held a gentle position as an observer‭, ‬allowing the way I captured images to be guided by light‭, ‬pattern‭, ‬and silhouette‭. ‬The straightforwardness of the images‭, ‬and at‭ ‬times even the lack of technical skill‭, ‬pushed me to work more intuitively with my surroundings‭. ‬This is how we must approach such an environment‭: ‬with humbleness‭. ‬Nature is the master here‭. ‬It knows much more than we do‭.‬"

Notes are studies for the larger works Azul creates and are shown upstairs. They come in various shapes, are set between glass and can be viewed from both sides. These works can either be hung or freestanding and are equally as captivating as their larger counterparts. On view until 10.4.26.

Normally this image says “introducing:”, but our current work-in resident needs no introduction as it’s @azulesanto, taking over the attic studio to produce an artist book during this month of February. In this book she will captivate her process of working, which is quite extensive yet normally cosplays as a humble background figure.

Azul will take us along in the becoming of this show, Spiked Pepper, reaching from the years she researched Peruvian indigenous textile traditions from afar, to her recent time up close during her residency in the Amazon last year. She captures how she starts from introspection, considering how each work will interact with its surroundings while maintaining minimal environmental impact.

As her work is meant to belong in nature, instead of revealing it, all works start from and end as living organisms.

The book will be alike to her work, as both are installations - one is fleeting and the book will stay. Working with landscapes on textiles that are not reserved for longevity created a need to encapsulate her work into a book, as a sort of scriptures to the values of the work. To create a visual subtitle to the pieces.

“I want to make this book a walk in the forest, an installation of its own, the way a book can hold a structure for new ways of keeping information.”

Go a step ahead and mark April 9th into your calendar, as we will launch the book that Thursday evening, 19.00-20.30, more details will follow later down the month.

Aguajal 1 & 2

In preparation for this exhibition, Azul spent time in the Amazon, following her curiosity towards a world within a world: one defined not by names, but by beauty. In the Aguajal, a Peruvian peatland forest, she encountered what she describes as a threshold space, a magic zone. The forest arranged itself intuitively, like a lived-in home, where every surface, texture, and form feel deliberately placed, each element engaged in a quiet dialogue with the next.

These two works on our ground floor are part of Azul Espirito Santo’s solo show Spiked Pepper, on view at tender prospects until 10.4.26.
