Gotipua is one of Odisha’s oldest surviving dance traditions, born around the 16th century to preserve devotional temple art after the decline of Mahari dancers. These young boys dedicated years of their childhood to mastering expressions, storytelling, flexibility, balance and painful acrobatic postures all in devotion to Lord Jagannath.

What looks graceful on stage is actually built on intense training, bruises, discipline and patience from a very young age. Every movement carries culture, spirituality and generations of heritage. In fact, many elements of modern Odissi were shaped and preserved through Gotipua traditions. Even legendary Odissi guru Kelucharan Mohapatra began his artistic journey through the Gotipua tradition before becoming one of the greatest names in Indian classical dance.

In today’s world where boys are often mocked for anything considered “feminine” traditions like Gotipua remind us that art has never been confined by gender. These young artists are not just dancing they are carrying forward centuries of Odisha’s identity with pride.

Some traditions deserve more than applause.
They deserve understanding, respect and preservation.
