OctobassSome of you may not be familiar with this instrument... It’s only the largest stringed instrument ever brought into existence: a three-string, super-sized bass (plain gut, oddly tuned C-G-C) thought up by a French luthier around 1850...Scale length is about 200 centimetres (2 meters!!!) or almost 6 feet 7 inches: compare that with the 105-110 centimetres (or 41-43 inches) of a full-size double bass or with the 86 centimetres (or 34 inches) of a full size bass guitar!!! 😱😱😱...It can produce a C0 at 16Hz (your ear normally goes down to 20Hz: can you say upper harmonics?!?): that’s one full octave below a six-string bass guitar or below a double bass with a C extension!!!Its strings are gauged at 4.0, 5.3 and 8.0 millimetres (a 0.105 inch E-string on your electric bass is 2.667 millimetres and a 0.125 inch B string on your electric bass is 3.175 millimetres: just saying)!!!Modern versions of the instrument have been built and (believe it or not) gigged (like the one you see pictured): strings supplied by the Italian company Aquila Corde Armoniche (a special project for them, of course, which took up 4 kilometres or 2.5 miles of guts for one set of string)!!! 😱😱😱...It is so huge at 3.5 meters (or almost 11 feet 6 inches) tall, it has a system of levers and pedals to play in first or second (or any) position!!!Some sound clips can be found on YouTube...
