Sunday website update !

In march I returned to Cairo to pursue my ongoing project : ā€œUnder the Highway Shadeā€, exploring life, and death in the City of the Dead. A beautiful place currently being destroyed to make way for new highways and flyover bridges to connect to New Cairo.

I’ll be back, again.
But as for now a new edit is updated on my website, so please do have a look šŸ‘€!

Panorama

This picture was taken on Mokattam hill last January during my short research trip around the City of the Dead. Overlooking Cairo this place was considered to be one of the city’s best viewpoints to enjoy the sunset, until Saudi Arabian Real Estate Company Ā« Scope Ā» and Egypt’s « El Nasr Housing Company came in to work on the Mokattam Corniche project.

Now climb over the wall if you want to watch the sunset ! taken in Cairo, Egypt by @b.c.theodore

Those new roads are said to improve trafic and connect the heart of the capital with the new administrative one being built 45km to the east, a mega project costing billions of dollars. The destruction has sparked a public outcry over the loss of valuable architecture and a unique cultural heritage, as well as the loss of what is considered today a lively neighbourhood. Preservationists fear the end of the City of the Dead, carved up between highways, with its remaining pieces vulnerable to further destruction.

City of the dead, Cairo, January 2025.

Starting from the 19th century, people from the countryside decided to settle in the area, and by the mid 20th century, due to Cairo’s intensive urbanisation and its ensuing housing shortage, the mysterious City of the Dead had become home to not only the dead, but also the living. Tomb caretakers, morticians, gravediggers and their families, along with tens of thousands of Cairenes, found shelter in and among the grand mausoleums. by @b.c.theodore

Following President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi’s mega-building masterplan to modernise the country, the Egyptian government is currently razing wide areas of the historic City of the dead to make way for several highways and flyover bridges.
