February. We were on a surprise trip to New York — it was the morning after Valentine’s Day. He took me to the botanical gardens and I couldn’t understand why he’d want to be outside when it was freezing. Besides a flock of geese, it seemed like we were the only souls there. He took my gloved hand and led me carefully up the ice-covered path to the little pond. We skipped stones and pinecones and our laughter cut through the silent garden. Then he stopped throwing pinecones and asked me if I knew how much he loved me. It was so quiet I could hear his heart beating. And then he got down on one knee. by @b.k

The story behind my civil wedding garden dress:

When I saw photos of this exact dress from AVEC AMOUR’s first runway collection, I knew it was meant for me. Maria is not only an extremely skilled designer and seamstress, she’s also excessively generous. On an early design call for a different garment, I asked about this dress and she leaned out of frame and pulled it from a magical wardrobe. When I asked if she knew what she was going to do with it, she simply told me that it was mine if I wanted it. The connection was instant, and so was our friendship.

I began sketching modified designs for the dress shortly after, some of which are included here. I was inspired by regency-era paintings, greek statues, and nymphs. The phrase, “like a water fairy coming out of a lily pond” came up often in the design process. We worked on the other elements that would complete the look. She sent me photos from fabric stores in Spain. I described a veil to Maria, then sent over a sketch of two flowers above my ears. She immediately went to work on sourcing the perfect vintage peonies, made of silk, which she hand sewed onto the veil when I visited her studio in Pheonix.

The last detail, and perhaps the most challenging, were the sleeves. On her trips between Spain and the U.S., Maria scoured fabric stores. We went back and forth over the perfect fabric that would hold its shape, let light through, and compliment the other materials. We prototyped 3 versions until we had the perfect sleeves. Maria fixed them to my dress with delicate hidden silk buttons.

The final piece is a joyous triumph, a work of art, one of a kind. Silk-lined, antique French lace, pleated silk bra, removable silk organza sleeves, and 1960s German silk peonies.

Our dear Brianna got married in a custom AVEC AMOUR look 🤍 the first bridal look we’ve crafted for her is based on the runway dress we presented in Barcelona two years ago. We reworked the one of a kind french lace adding a new pleated silk bralette, removable silk organza sleeves and a custom veil featuring antique german fabric flowers.
