i had the pleasure of catching @b0r0s_ at @posterhousenyc house last week. after seeing them live and diving into their discography, i felt like sharing why i find their music so cool and compelling. (i also haven’t written something like this in a while.)

hailing from nyc, b0r0s channels the energy of early 2000s alternative music, blending pop-punk with indie-rock to create something both nostalgic and distinctly their own. what makes it refreshing is the perspective they bring to a genre often associated with suburbia. as first-generation americans with roots in latin america and the caribbean, they filter that familiar rebellious spirit through their own experiences growing up in nyc. and their songs are diverse, too. while ‘good soldier’ and ‘no way out’ are all about defiance and nonconformity, they reveal a softer side in the heartbreaking ‘too far gone’ and in the romantic ‘wanna know u’ (which is exactly the kind of song you listen to while thinking about your high school crush).

but perhaps no song captures their identity better than ‘y2k obsession.’ it has a killer guitar riff, a punchy snare, and a repetitive catchy refrain. it’s pure early-2000s nostalgia. lyrics like “her 02 malibu has got me tryna see some things” establish the era, but “she says she’s from out of town, i’m from the boogie down” brings it back to the bx. that’s just one example of how they’re taking a familiar sound, and reimagining it through their own lens.

you should give them a listen. taken in Poster House by @b0r0s_
