Emotional to be back at @britishmuseum this week for the 250th LGBTQ+ tour.

And a rare treat to reconnect with Richard Parkinson @modern_antiquarianism and @dannouveau to remember #ShyActivist Kate Smith and the early days of museum LGBTQ+ history tours.

Kate wrote and delivered some of the first queer collections tours. Building on work at Museum of London, she was determined to highlight LGBTQ+ stories from every era in history.

By 2007 she’d written and delivered tours of @wearelondonmuseum @vamuseum + @britishmuseum as part of Untold London.

She’d also produced a paper LGBTQ+ trail - the backbone of A Little Gay History written with Richard Parkinson.

By 2012 we’d delivered the tour to 100+ people as part of #WriteQueerLondon. And hundreds more had used the map to self guide.

In 2017 the museum put on Love Desire Identity, an exhibition based on the book. I contributed from Untold London, rewrote the tour and pilot script.

18 ish years after that first tour, here we are stood in the Round Reading Room at the 250th LGBTQ+ tour of the BM collections.

Hearing the fabulous volunteer team give their personal takes on each object was a powerful reflection moment.

Every year the tour grows with new research and insights. The amazing tour leaders weave in new facts and stories supported by the BM vol coordinators and museum colleagues.

Kate started this work at a time when few were brave enough to tell our stories. It’s in the best hands now to continue and grow so that even more people can learn about this “great unrecorded history”.
