You simply can’t spoil a newborn. 💙

It’s the title of my first book but it’s also something I’ve spent many years reassuring new parents about.

Those first three months with your baby can be wonderful, exhausting, overwhelming and sometimes all three in the space of an hour!

You Simply Can’t Spoil a Newborn brings together my experience, practical advice and gentle approach to help you navigate those early weeks - from sleep and settling to feeding, routines and, importantly, looking after yourself too.

You can order a copy directly from my website, find it through good bookstores and online retailers, libraries, or choose the ebook or audiobook version through your favourite provider.

Afterpay is available too. x

Swaddling is a way of wrapping your newborn safely in a swaddle cloth to provide comfort and reassurance, and I often find it works particularly well for unsettled babies under 12 weeks.

Safe swaddling can also help with sleep by reducing the effect of your baby’s startle (Moro) reflex, and it can become one of their first little sleep cues.

The important word here, though, is 'safe'.

A safe swaddle should be firm around your baby’s upper body, while still allowing plenty of room for their hips and legs to move freely. From the nappy down, the swaddle should be loose rather than wrapped tightly around the legs or tucked firmly underneath baby.

I cover three different swaddling techniques in my first book, and I’ll be sharing more about these over the coming weeks.

I also have a video tutorial on my website showing different ways to swaddle, and if you have any questions, feel free to pop them in the comments below. 💙

Did daylight saving sneak up on you this year? 😴⏰

The clocks went forward yesterday, and if you hadn't given it a single thought until your baby's routine suddenly seemed an hour out, don't panic!

You can simply switch to the new time and adjust your baby's routine as you go. It might take a few days for everything to settle back into place.

OR, if that doesn't work well for your family, you can keep things closer to your baby's "old" time for now and gradually shift feeds, naps and bedtime by around 15 minutes each day until you've caught up with the new clock.

Daylight saving is a little like "mini jet lag". It's not only the clock change that can make a difference either, the changing light outside can affect sleep, so good blackout blinds can be really helpful as our evenings get lighter.

A few other things to remember:

• Try to keep the bedroom dark for sleep - dark is for sleeping, light is for playing.
• With older children, the less fuss made about the clock changing, the better!
• Babies under around 16 weeks often aren't affected in quite the same way, as their sleep patterns are still developing.
• Give everyone a little time to adjust. You don't have to have the whole routine perfectly back on track today.

And if you completely forgot daylight saving was happening until the clocks changed… you're definitely not alone! 💙

Thank you Ashley, it was a pleasure supporting you and your family 💙

"Dorothy has been so amazing! Our 7 month old daughter was co-sleeping and waking up several times a night before having Dorothy's help. Now after 6 weeks, our daughter is intermittently sleeping through the night in her cot and if not - she will only wake once a night. We are so grateful for all of Dorothy's help and if we have another baby, we will get Dorothy involved from the very beginning." by @babyhelpnz

There’s a lot more tucked away on my website than you might realise! 💙

Over the years I’ve written many articles about babies, sleep, feeding, settling, routines and parenting, and we’re gradually adding more of these to the website so they’re easy to find and read.

One of these is Developing Good Sleep Habits, where I talk about helping babies learn the skill of sleep, recognising their natural rhythms and using what I call TACT – Time, Acceptance, Consistency and Touch.

There is no one sleep solution that will suit every baby or every household. It’s about having practical tools and guidelines, then finding what works for your baby and your family.

You can read the full article here:
https://babyhelp.co.nz/testimonials/dorothy-waide-developing-good-baby-sleep-habits/

And if you’d like to have a browse, there’s already a large collection of articles, PDFs, magazine features and other resources gathered in the Media Gallery:
https://babyhelp.co.nz/media-gallery-print/

And keep checking back – we’ll be adding more from Dorothy’s collection over time.💙

Sometimes one conversation isn’t quite enough 💙

Parenting rarely follows a straight line. Sleep changes, feeding changes, new challenges pop up and sometimes it helps to have someone experienced to come back to as you work through them.

Dorothy’s Three Calls Phone/Video Support is designed for parents who would like a little more ongoing, long-distance support with their baby’s sleep, feeding, food or routines.

You’ll receive:

• 3 x phone or video consultations (see link for T&Cs)
• Follow-up conversations tailored to what’s happening for your family
• Practical guidance to help you work through challenges as they arise

Rather than trying to figure everything out on your own, you have the opportunity to check back in, talk through what’s happening and adjust your approach as your baby and family move forward.

Experienced support. Practical guidance. Someone in your corner when you need it. 💙

I was going through some old papers and found this article. It was an interesting University of Otago study involving more than 800 Dunedin families found that brief support around infant sleep was associated with a lower risk of obesity in early childhood.

Interestingly, the researchers suggested that self-regulation may be part of the reason why.

Newborn babies naturally wake frequently overnight to feed. But as babies grow, particularly from around 16 weeks, we can begin to look at night waking a little differently.

Sometimes they are hungry. Sometimes they simply need help resettling back to sleep.

Resettling isn't about avoiding or withholding a feed. It's about giving your baby the opportunity to settle first, so that we are feeding for hunger rather than automatically feeding at every waking.

And if your baby doesn't resettle? Feed them.
We always respond to what our babies are telling us.

Broken sleep is hard on the whole family, too. Ongoing sleep deprivation can affect our mood, our ability to cope and our relationships, so supporting a baby's sleep is also about supporting the wellbeing of their parents.

If you'd like to know more about the gentle resettling techniques I use with families, leave a comment below or contact me at dorothy@babyhelp.co.nz.

Some lovely feedback - thank you 💙

"Dear Dorothy,

A quick email to say thank you so much for writing this book. My baby has just turned one and it has been such a helpful and reassuring guide throughout her first year. It really was indispensable. Every time we had a question or a problem, I would consult the book and nearly always find some great information and support on the current issue we had.

Your writing style is so lovely and warm. Just what I needed during this crazy year." by @babyhelpnz
