Mikey General – It Choose Me 🇯🇲

(2022, Daptone Records / Dunham – US)

It Choose Me brings a proper roots-and-culture tune, built around a smoky, echo-heavy rhythm, warm bassline and Mikey General’s hypnotic vocal delivery.

The track comes from a heavyweight link-up between veteran Jamaican chanter Mikey General and renowned producer Victor Axelrod (Ticklah). Axelrod digs into the vaults for a classic instrumental originally built years earlier for Rob Symeonn’s Jah Only.

Over that driving analog rhythm, Mikey General delivers an effortless, timeless message, while keyboardist Earl Maxton supplies the brilliant, spacey dub cut “Prattle” on the B-side.

Time Unlimited – Reaction 🇯🇲
(1973, Black Art / Upsetter – JA)

This one is Time Unlimited in full harmony roots mode — deep vocals, spiritual energy, and that unmistakable early Black Ark atmosphere running straight through it. Reaction was recorded during Lee “Scratch” Perry’s formative Black Ark era, blending smoky production, warm basslines, and hypnotic harmonies into pure roots meditation.

The group was formed by Glasford Manning a young Junior Delgado, Owen Marshall, Orville Smith, who later spoke about the four of them coming together to build Time Unlimited during Jamaica’s golden age of roots reggae. You can hear that chemistry all over this tune — effortless harmonies, conscious lyrics, and Perry’s loose, echo-heavy production giving everything room to breathe.

Pure early Ark sound — spiritual, raw, and timeless. 🔊

“Sound business is my life… I am in sound totally, you know. I don’t have one foot in sound and one out. I am in sound — I run a sound. I and the team, you know.”

Filmed in 1981, Sound Business remains one of the most authentic portraits of Britain’s emerging reggae sound system culture — identity, community, and survival on film.

Shot on 16mm by Molly Dineen it follows Lloyd Coxsone’s Sir Coxsone Outernational and the rising Little Lion Sound System, revealing the dedication, rivalry, and unity that powered the movement.

Born from the Windrush generation, these systems transformed basements and community halls into spaces of belonging and resistance. Every bassline echoed Kingston through the streets of London and Birmingham.

Coxsone’s words still ring true — a generation who built legacy from sound, sweat, and shared purpose, still vibrating through today’s roots and dub culture.
