10 years ago, I was lost.

I was deeply unhappy in school, unhappy with my music, generally unhappy.

I would frequently email beats to my friends who rapped, and unfortunately they weren’t feeling them. Due to the kindness of @rothwho I was introduced to @deemspencer and the @doperebelsnyc crew.

After some twitter correspondence, Deem mentioned that he needed a DJ. I volunteered for the position. I took a bus down and we met in person for the first time at @rafamixedit place in the Bronx, where Deem would play me the demos of what would soon become his debut EP “Sunflower”

While Deem also didn’t seem terribly impressed by my beats, he seemed to value my creative input. What began as a professional relationship quickly evolved into a lasting and meaningful friendship, and I realized I didn’t have to be a super producer to feel fulfilled through music. That first show, we began the process of working out the live set.

Now, a decade later, we have struggled together, laughed together, grieved together, traveled around the country, and it still feels like we’ve only just begun.

To listen to Deem Spencer’s music is to listen to yourself.

Perhaps your inner voice is quiet, and drowned out by various factors outside of your control. Listening to Deem has brought me inspiration, guidance, and the comfort of knowing that although “we think we alone” - we are never alone.

Working alongside Deem for the past decade has given me purpose. My Mom’s childhood home in New Jersey
🌞
My Grandmother was a prolific artist. She painted angels and animals among other things, and loved to make tiles.

I didn’t know her very well but my memories of her are fond.
Visiting this place feels like a pilgrimage.
I try to remind myself that I descend from artists.
Perhaps their spirits will imbue me with creativity.

I hope to be as prolific as my Marmee, Erica Barton Haba. by @bacchusthegod

Jun Yamada aka Jun Seba aka Nujabes made his debut with Metaphorical Music in 2003. The Japanese producer combined MPC-chopped-and-processed jazz samples, crunchy drums and deft turntablism to weave a beautiful and unique tapestry of sounds.

Enlisting rappers Shing02, Substantial, Cise Starr, members of 5 Deez and saxophonist/ multi-instrumentalist Uyama Hiroto, Nujabes announced his presence to the world with this album.

Backpack rap rejoice.
Graffiti artists and skateboarders.
DJ’s and crate diggers.
Jazz cats and Rap cats.
This album is potent.
Impossible not to nod your head to.

Nujabes went on to release two more studio albums and several Hydeout Productions (the label he ran) compilations. He also provided the soundtrack to Samurai Champloo, an anime classic.
He passed away in 2010 at age 36.

He inspired a generation of producers with his sound and organic approach to music.
A pioneer of “lo-fi” and so much more than that.

I love this album. This was (my favorite) guitarist John Frusciante’s second studio album with the band, and the first to incorporate his gentler, more melodic songwriting approach to a band that had been blurring the lines between punk, funk, and metal in their previous releases.

This was also the first record that Rick Rubin produced for the Chili Peppers.
Recorded at “The Mansion” in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, the power of this album will live forever.

Funky tracks like “The Power of Equality” “If You Have To Ask” and “Funky Monks” contrasted with the softer, introspective “Under The Bridge” and “I Could Have Lied” - which polarized a portion of their fanbase who were expecting more bombastic funk at breakneck speed. As a child of the 90’s, I wasn’t too familiar with the Peppers’ earlier work before Frusciante’s arrival, so this mixture of hard and soft has always worked for me. A wonderful balance.

Thank you to @winter_records who sold me this tape @bkflearecfair last summer. It is cherished.

My first instrumental album “60ii” is out now via Bandcamp and will be available on streaming services soon.

This project is a love letter to the MPC 60ii, a beautiful sampler, drum machine, and midi production center.

I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

I have many people to thank for their help and inspiration. First and foremost, the MPC Guru @kanamit_mpc for hooking up my 60ii with the 3.10 OS and expanded sample memory. If you need any MPC advice or service, Mr Kanamit is your guy.

On Tuesday, June 3, I will be hosting a listening party @bierwax for my first ever instrumental project “60ii”
Which comes out Tomorrow.

For those who know me personally, they know that this is a new thing for me. I have not released new music since 2018.

I often fool around and make beats and they get saved on 3.5” floppy disks with capacities of 1.44 Megabytes. And there they remain, suspended in a physical medium somewhere between the analog and digital worlds.

Tomorrow, 6/2/2025 I will release 62 tracks that I produced entirely on the Akai MPC 60ii designed by Roger Linn.

I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I did making them.
Some are abrasive, some are calming.
All are Bacchus.
Freestyle over them with your friends this summer.
