After the Kurukshetra war, the five Pandava brothers and Draupadi renounce their kingdom and begin a final pilgrimage toward the Himalayas, seeking heaven in their living bodies. A dog starts following them on this long trek, never leaving their side. One by one, Draupadi and the Pandavas fall and die on the way because their earthly flaws weigh them down. Only Yudhishthira, the eldest and most righteous, continues with the loyal dog still beside him right to the summit.

At the peak, Indra, king of the gods, appears in his chariot and invites Yudhishthira into heaven. But there’s a condition: the dog cannot go with him. Indra says dogs aren’t allowed. Yudhishthira refuses outright. He says that this creature has faithfully accompanied him, and abandoning it now would be a sin against his own vow to protect and care for the helpless. He insists he won’t enter heaven without the dog.

Moved by Yudhishthira’s compassion and steadfastness to duty, the dog then reveals its true identity: it is Dharma (also called Yama), the god of righteousness and Yudhishthira’s own divine father, who had been testing him till the end. Only after this revelation is Yudhishthira allowed to ascend to heaven proving that his loyalty and sense of moral duty were greater than even the promise of paradise.
