The holidays…. 💫

Another jam-packed break full of feeding a small army (& their friends 😂), a flying visit to Melbourne to catch up with Jake (only 1 year of Uni to go now 💪) and what I felt like was keeping the next group of SAS fit, engaged and riding their bikes 😫🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

I’m exhausted 😴

Is your little one struggling with words? 👶🏻🗣️ 🫧

Are they saying one word, but not all of the time?

Or are they saying a few words, but they don’t have a range of words.

So they aren’t using lots of different words.

Then follow this tip ⬇️

One of my GO TO activities in my paediatric clinic @thebackchatclinic is BUBBLES 🫧 🫧

Every single day, I am playing with BUBBLES with the little ones that I see 👦🏼👶🏻👧🏻👦🏻👶

And what’s not to love about BUBBLES.

- They go UP
- They POP
- They go HIGH into the SKY

And you can easily incorporate MOVEMENT into this activity.

Yesterday some little people and I:

- Ate bubbles 😳
- Kicked bubbles
- Pushed bubbles
- Blew bubbles back up into the air
- Jumped off the couch and caught them (YES - Shhhhh 🤫)

BUBBLES are one of the best, most affordable & accessible early language activities around 🫧 🫧

Have a question about your little one’s language development?

DM us here at BackChat.

And stay tuned for more great tips ⭐️

So true ❤️

Outdoor play is crucial for developing brains, by:

- Learning to do HARD things (listen to Conversations with Olwen to hear about this 👩🏻🎧🗣️)

- Building connection, care and empathy (also on the podcast 😉)

- Socialising & making friends with peers of different ages 👶🏻👧🏻🧒🏼👶👦🏻🧑🏼‍🦱

- Learning to wait, to follow instructions but also how to problem solve 🤓

My favourite part of the BackChat Park Plays is our little village, our community that we’ve created.

By the seaside 🌊 ☀️ 🌴

Is your little one struggling with language?

Do they have a small word bank of single words?

Are you trying to build this word bank AND also help them combine two words?

See these tips below ⬇️ ⬇️

* Every day words are best

See in this clip how I start with the word “bye” and then extend into “bye bye”.

I repeated this often with my little busy bee 🐝 and through constant modelling, he extended too into two words.

* It takes time

In this clip, our family of 5 are mid-holiday in Tasmania and we’d been sitting here for a few minutes letting Master P chat. We just happened across this field and my toddler was thrilled 🤩

I could see how motivated my busy little one was to watch them, so when we stopped the car, I used it as a language opportunity.

* Copy high interest tasks at home.

My youngest has always LOVED animals. Dogs, cats, cows - you name it - he is an animal lover 🐶 🐈‍⬛

So I used this interest and brought it into his play at home.

And guess what 🤷🏻‍♀️ his language skills in terms of his word bank AND his combinations, starting developing quickly.

IF I’d used Dinosaurs 🦕 Nope, not an interest area to him ❌

IF I’d used trucks and cars 🚗 Nope, not an interest area to him. ❌

It was the same with figurines, loud toys and regular characters (e.g. Chase from Paw Patrol) ❌❌❌

Do what they love and what piques their interest.

Brain development takes time, but when we give our little ones that time - like anything - with repeated practice and using high interest activities 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️ Now he talks non stop 😂

Follow me for more language and brain development tips 👩🏻🧠🗣️

I’m seeing a little person at the moment. They live, literally in the middle of nowhere.

Surrounded by fields and paddocks. Not another person outside of their family, in sight or nearby for hours.

Remote.

Very isolated.

But a complex little person needing LOTS of specialised support 📚🗣️🧠

And that’s where I’ve come in…

Referred to me by another SLP, this little one is REALLY struggling to read.

And when everyone else can - in the class that you visit for one day a month three hours away - you notice.

But we’ve had a breakthrough this week…

The smallest of steps forward 👣

Fluency and retention at the most basic level. Again it’s a small step. But it’s a step forward.

Steps this little person has never been able to make before.

And a wonderful Mum, ready to consolidate and to build that skill 🩷

But it’s what I said that made this gorgeous little person’s eyes light up.

If they were in my clinic, I’d be ‘pretend’ spraying them with water or reaching for the fire extinguisher saying “you are on FIRE 🔥 today”.

But that’s tough to convey online.

So instead I said “you are a Reading machine”. “That’s amazing 🤩 let’s try that again”.

And this little person did. Over & over & over again.

Until this little person saw how wonderful they are and that now they ‘can’ read 📖

Words really do matter.

They not only build our children up, but they become their inner voice.

Speech Therapy doesn’t have to be boring 🥱 and CONNECTION must always come first.

Always.

Connection builds regulation.

Connection builds engagement.

Connection builds the relationship.

Connection builds the brain.

Which leads to better OUTCOMES.

So:

Get out of that chair ✔️
Grab a ball ✔️
A mini tramp ✔️

And just get moving 👣

No one EVER built a relationship standing still.

Connect☝️ and the rest will follow.

Clare Rowe’s comments on the “Autism Paradox” and the “nuances” of Autism really shocked me @clarerowe_psychologist

Firstly as a parent. But also as a therapist and Speech Pathologist.

Because Autism is a spectrum and little ones change - they make HUGE shift - with targeted intervention and a supportive home environment.

And I know this from spending decades working with families, but also raising my own little one.

I doubt Grace Tame’s family would appreciate these comments.

In fact I’m sure they’ve put thousands of hours into her; taking her to music or drama, sport - maybe helping her learn to read - achieve academically.

I know many little people in my clinic who will be similar to Grace as adults. Doctors, lawyers, therapists - advocates - with the biggest of hearts and big passions.

Some of them did not speak in sentences until they were 4.

Some did not speak until they were 4.

Others were not able to sit still until they were 5.

For others, it was a long road with specialist level support AND huge work at home.

A child with Autism doesn’t just ‘suddenly’ arrive as an adult like Grace and the many other little ones I’ve worked with.

It’s takes time, patience, persistence and determination.

To say otherwise or pretend it is a “nuance” is offensive.

But it also leads to a deeper conversation.

One I’ll be having on my podcast Conversations with Olwen 👩🏻🎧🗣️

About EXPERIENCE.

It takes a highly experienced therapist or SLP to work with a family on the long journey to see a child improve FUNCTION and move through, levels of the Autism spectrum.

I can think of 8 families off the top of my head in my clinic, who have made HUGE shift in the last 5 years.

Some have made it in one year, others in 4 to 5 years.

And because I am working with families day in and day out, I see these shifts in FUNCTION.

Social, academic and learning, motor and language FUNCTION.

Most children are not born at a high level. It takes YEARS of therapy and one to one support at home, to get there.

There is no PARADOX. There is no NUANCE.

And our Therapists within the NDIS should really get this 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ by @backchatspeechpathology

So many of our Mums are not coping at the moment 🥲

It’s hard work juggling a child with never ending energy, developmental challenges and working outside of the home OR being a SAHM.

It’s a tough road and every day is hard 🔥 some days are brutal…

That quote from @readyornot.pod the other day summed up so many stories I hear.

Mums are “surviving motherhood”.

Like our children, Mums are not thriving.

Many I speak to don’t even have the head space to enjoy it. Life is just so busy and chaotic.

Interesting isn’t it 🤔

How just like our children, our Mums are not THRIVING.

And we know that Mums are the rock 🪨 the foundation on which a family is built.

And a Mum’s Mental Health is THE most critical factor, impacting on their child’s whole of life outcomes.

But let’s get them back to work quick smart, hey Albo @albomp

One of our Fairy Tale favourites 📖 🫚 📚truly a family favourite at The BackChat Clinic.

But entry does come with a WARNING 😂😂

Your children receiving therapy aren’t the ONLY ones that will become chatterboxes (or BackChatters 😜)

One very special part of the clinical work that my team and I do, is watching a family grow..

From babies to toddlers, into preteens and then High School graduates.

It takes a village to raise a child.

And we have a truly beautiful village, here at The BackChat Clinic ❤️
