POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The Back Cover attended Sex Discrimination Commissioner Dr Anna Cody’s powerful address at the National Press Club of Australia, where our founder @mibenge7 Nsenduluka asked about intersectionality and its impact on First Nations women, migrant women, and women of colour in workplaces.

Dr Cody’s response shed light on how overlapping identities shape women’s experiences of harassment and inequality and why intersectionality must guide reforms.

Thank you to Dr Cody and her team for the opportunity.

Why this anti-hate campaign misses the mark.

Kyle Sandilands and Eddie McGuire are among the faces of a new national anti-racism campaign backed by Australia’s biggest media outlets.

#StandUpToHate is being promoted as an “unprecedented show of solidarity”, but critics say some of its ambassadors could be sending mixed messages.

On Friday morning‘s episode of The Briefing, Chris Spyrou speaks with journalist and founder of Back Cover Media, Mibengé Nsenduluka about the campaign, the controversy, and whether it can lead to real change.

🎧 The Briefing: Can Kyle Sandilands end racism?

‘Disagreement is legitimate, abuse is not’: Australians urged to stand with Nyadol Nyuon after backlash

Words by @mibenge7 ✍️

Nyadol Nyuon recently went on national television to talk about migration, race and what it means to belong in Australia.

Within days, her own belonging was being questioned.

The Australian lawyer and human rights advocate had used the ABC’s National Forum on migration to challenge ideas about assimilation and argue that the country’s increasingly heated migration debate was becoming entangled with a deeper conversation about race.

Her comments — including that there was no single “white culture” and that she had “no intention of assimilating” — triggered fierce criticism.

But the reaction did not remain confined to her ideas.

Now, a statement of solidarity spearheaded by award-winning human rights advocate and lawyer Mariam Veiszadeh is calling on Australians to stand with Nyuon and add their names to #WeStandWithNyadol.

The statement says Nyuon has been subjected to “vicious online threats and racial vilification” since the ABC broadcast.

Separately, migration lawyer Tina Nematian says parts of the social media response have targeted Nyuon’s background, family, ethnicity and whether she belongs in Australia.

Australia has never been more multicultural than it is today.

Nearly one in three Australians were born overseas, while more than half the population has at least one parent born abroad.

In cities like Melbourne and Sydney, diversity is no longer some political talking point. It is everyday life. It is the food we eat, the languages we hear, the classrooms our children sit in and the communities we build together.

Yet this week, two separate stories dominated national conversation and exposed something deeply uncomfortable about modern Australia.

The first involved self-proclaimed comedian Lisa Jane Spencer, who lost her job at Peninsula Hot Springs after outrage over racist social media skits mocking Aboriginal Australians.

One of the videos included references to petrol sniffing and Aboriginal identity in a way many Indigenous people described as degrading and dehumanising.

The second involved renewed headlines surrounding Pauline Hanson’s One Nation after polling suggested the party may be gaining traction amid growing anxiety around migration, housing affordability and the rising cost of living.

At first glance, the two stories appear unrelated.

One is about comedy.

The other is about politics.

But together, they point to something much bigger happening in Australia right now.

Racism is no longer just surviving quietly in the background of Australian society.

Increasingly, it is being rewarded with attention, money, influence and political power.

African and multicultural families across Melbourne will gather in the city’s southeast this Saturday March 21 to celebrate children’s rights, cultural pride, and community connection at the Day of the African Child event hosted by the African Women and Families Network (AWAFN).

The community celebration will bring together families, youth, service providers, and community leaders for an afternoon of cultural performances, panel discussions, and family activities.

AWAFN Program Manager and Coordinator Theresa Ssali said the event holds deep historical and cultural significance.

“The AWAFN Day of the African Child event commemorates the historic struggle of African children for equal education and their fundamental rights,” Ssali told BACKCOVERNEWS.

“The event focuses particularly on services available for African and other multicultural children, youth, and families, providing a platform to celebrate cultural identity, promote inclusion, and empower young people within the community.”

Several Black Aussie creators are speaking out after they were allegedly denied access to the TikTok Awards red carpet, despite being invited guests.
