📍belly, kentish town

as soon as i saw belly come up on a suggested post on instagram when the team were still renovating i knew i had to go - how could i hear the words filipino bistro food and not be excited?!

we went with a large group of friends so we were able to order almost the entire menu to try a bit of everything. boy were we impressed!

tempura cod pandesal and nori chips steak tartare were absolute standouts from starters. the delicate and soft bun of the pandesal was perfectly complimented by the flakey cod. the steak tartare was so so flavourful and very much fusion inspired with asian flavours meeting the classic french dish. the nori crisps also gave the dish a welcome crunch. if you aren’t in a big group i would say skip the aubergine.

we ordered all the mains and shared it between us. all the mains were brilliant, the seafood ‘caldereta’ was rich but with rice well balanced. the wagyu picanha was so so juicy and the sauce every bit of umami you could imagine. the chicken was perfectly cooked and tender with the sauce again a great buttery accompaniment to the pandan rice. whilst i also enjoyed the woodland mushrooms main it unfortunately just couldn’t compare to the others.

last for dessert, a lot of us had high expectations for the ube tiramisu given how many posts we’d seen of it but we were pleasantly shocked by how much we loved the fish sauce caramel profiterole! we also enjoyed the sorbets which were also incredibly refreshing for summer ☀️ personally i did not reach for the mango ‘suman’ brûlée nearly as much as the others, i found the texture a bit too mushy.

side note and unpictured was the wonderful cocktails! the melon sour was my personal favourite and would recommend if you love a sweeter cocktail :)

📍 @lot.103 , newington green

another cute neighbourhood cafe for you guys to visit! such cute vibes, but you’ll have to go early to grab a seat as it can get full quite quickly.

had a really decent brunch menu with lots of options for you to pick and mix in different items. i wasn’t super hungry this day so didn’t get lots but will definitely be back to try other options! the matcha wasn’t as strong as i’d like but overall really good, quality matcha.

there was also the SWEETEST booth seating which i didn’t get a pic of but so glad i finally got round to visiting!

📍song que pho bar, spitalfields

as someone who loves the OG song que in hoxton, I had to check out their newest branch in spitalfields.

with the weather being so warm i got the grilled pork bun bowl which came with a range of vegetables, grilled pork and spring rolls which were SO crispy. the dish mixed with their house sauce was a mixture of sweet and umami - so so addicting.

my friend and i also shared prawn cupcakes, which were a first for me. they were softer and smaller than i anticipated but quite moreish.

however i walked away preferring the OG branch 🫣 maybe that is tainted by nostalgia because song que pho bar very much lives up to its original flavours !

📍 the macbeth, hoxton

if you’re as chronically online as me you’d have seen the piri piri chicken from the macbeth on your feed. however! there is much else to be impressed by !!

for starters, the standout for us was the prego w/ peppercorn sauce - the steak was perfectly cooked and the bread, which sandwiched it, helpfully carried the peppercorn sauce!

second, the pink fir potatoes was soooo moreish! the green coriander sauce was super fragrant and SO YUM! BUT with the aioli 😩😩😩 we were obsessed, so much so we had to ask for extra!

on the bifana, it was great but i personally felt the cheese added too much richness to the overall dish.

for mains, the lamb vindaloo was so so tender! it was a more sour curry than i personally prefer but the meat was so soft and just perfect for lunch.

of course we also shared the piri piri chicken which i would recommend if you like a rich main, it for sure sent us all into a food coma.

if you don’t have the macbeth on your london food list, get it on there !!! lots of space for walk-ins (at least for lunch) !

did you know @gailsbakery actually post a lot of their recipes online? had a go at baking the blueberry brioche and boyyyy did it take a whole half a day!

super worth it if you’re keen for a day of baking as the recipe is super easy to follow and turned out pretty good considering it was my first time making brioche 🤭

BURGER LOCATION : 📍 @empiretaverne8 , hackney

iykyk that leytonstone tavern is home to one of the best burgers in london, and now it’s also found its home in empire tavern in hackney!

we went for lunch and would super recommend going to try the burgers which are so yum. the burgers are juicy and soooo filling ! we also got the seaweed salt fries which were a nice little change from normal salted fries. personally i would skip the wings as i felt they were a little ordinary and lacked crispiness, plus the burgers were filling enough for us !

📍ramen moto

since temperatures have dropped slightly again i thought i would share a ramen spot from central ldn!

this was my second visit to ramen moto which is slightly unique in that they do creamy ramen broths, which are soooo comforting on a colder day. it is a bit more rich than a clear broth ramen but still so yummy and umami. the egg was also perfectly jammy inside. it was also nice to be able to select between two different size noodles and overall great for a walk in spot as i was able to walk in for a table of 3 at 6pm.

other than the creamy ramen, i would also recommend the karage which was super juicy. the prawn rolls were less worth it though if you’re not super hungry.

📍bao, king’s cross
bao has quickly become one of my most reliable places to go for great food, it consistently delivers and rarely requires much time in advance for a booking. i was super pleased to finally taste the grilled chicken rice bowl which i have tried to make from their recipe book but have never quite found the exact ingredients for - it did not disappoint! my must orders are the prawn bao and the horlicks bao which unfortunately i did not have the space for dessert this time round :( lastly, i was pleased to find out they do refillable tea of a decent quality and would also recommend that too!

📍 @hoko.london , brick lane

great for a quick bite although queues v much do impact how quick of a bite you’re able to get! managed to try their pork chop rice this time and it was solid, very reminiscent of hk.

📍handle bar cafe, oxford

spending more time in ox has meant getting to explore its food scene a lot more. I’ve thoroughly been enjoying the handle bar cafe’s brunch, particularly their full english! there is something SO moreish about their mushrooms which almost taste like they add packet noodle seasoning into (unfortunately, i can’t confirm this). would skip the kimchi pancakes next time as it was a little too spicy for me 😮‍💨

🏡 some home bites have included lots of cake this month and my first time making orzo! still cannot get over @jillian.barreca recipe for carrot caramel, would really recommend for a almost nutty caramel !

📍burnt, bethnal green

the most beautiful new space in bethnal green for a pastry and coffee or brunch (i’ll be back for brunch)!

i’ve been on the lookout for a good mont blanc coffee since my first in melbourne two years ago and i think i’ve found one!! it’s an orange infused cold foam over black coffee and it’s absolutely glorious!

we were a little early so most of the pastries hadn’t come out yet but i can confirm the nduja swirl was so yummy with saltiness added by the parmesan.

would recommend this wonderful, bright new space for a morning brunch or pastry and coffee, it’s tucked away under some railway arches!

documenting some recent bites, mostly homemade!

finally got round to baking @lungisalwaysbaking ‘s jam and toast cookies, using some leftover sourdough I baked ! v yum and deserving of its internet breaking status!

also enjoyed @heytea.uk ‘s new yingde black tea with cheese topping (think cheesecake cheese and not cheddar cheese ahaha), would recommend adding boba and going no sweetness ! tea was excellent quality and had a slight bitterness which balanced out the sweetness of the boba 🧋

and as always, @thedustyknuckle never disappoints with their orange and poppyseed swirl! perfectly not too sweet but super flakey! i’ve found the sweet spot is getting there no later than 9:30am on the weekend to avoid queues !

lastly, i was v happy to find @marksandspencerfood ‘s new Japanese milk bread loaf! it was previously only released as buns but v happy to see it in loaf form now, perfectly soft for both toast and sandwich uses!! i hope it stays long term 🤞🏻 other special @marksandspencerfood mention goes to its chicken seasoning which was great for a roast chicken 🐓
