Some photos from my last journey in Borneo.

I stood beneath trees that took centuries to grow, surrounded by ancient plants and living souls that knew only peace. They knew nothing of our world. They only knew the quiet of the woods, the damp shade of the leaves, and the canopy above them.

Right now those centuries of life are turning to ash in a matter of hours. In the Kalimantan wildfires.

It is not just the animals suffering, it is the entire living ecosystem. Ancient roots, wild orchids, and dense foliage built over generations are burning down to bare earth.

When the smoke comes, and the fire catches, the trees cannot walk away, the plants cannot hide, and the animals who depended on them are left with nowhere to run.

I look at these photos today and wonder if any of this is still standing.

Our Kalimantan Borneo rainforest is burning.
And it is not alone. From the peat swamps of Sumatra, to parts of Java and Nusa Tenggara, our islands are choking under toxic smoke.

- Over 300,000 hectares have burned nationwide.
- Health clinics across fire zones report over hundreds of thousands of people with severe breathing problems from toxic smoke.
- Thick smoke covers cities like Palangkaraya and Pontianak, forcing schools to close and children to stay indoors.
- Flights are canceled and the airport is going through a hectic situation.

I believe what is happening across Indonesia is not just a natural disaster. It is an ecological crime driven by human mismanagement, corporate exploitation, and policy failure.

Extreme dry weather might leaves grass and trees dry, making fires catch easily, BUT, In its natural state, Kalimantan’s peatland is wet like a soaked sponge and cannot easily burn.
Big projects dug deep canals to drain water out of the land. Once dried out, peat soil burns deep underground for months and is almost impossible to put out.

Across Indonesia, over 300,000 hectares have burned, with more than 74 percent of Kalimantan hotspots located inside corporate land concessions.

And In Central Kalimantan, over 80% of total provincial land has been given away for commercial permits, while legal changes (UU Cipta Kerja) weakened punishments for corporate land fires.

What can we do is to speak about it, share the news to maintain public pressure on decision-makers. We know it worked on some of our past country issues.

We can also support and donate to the ground teams that are fighting fires and saving wildlife, as well as the forest and wildlife preservation and restoration organizations such as BOS Foundation, YIARI, WWF Indonesia, and many more

At the end of this post are photos I took of our beautiful friends in Borneo, who might now be homeless, or dead.
I am so sorry we failed you :(
