Tango Unbound

“From the heart of Buenos Aires to the boundless possibilities of contemporary dance, Tango Unbound is a theatrical journey through movement, music, and artistic discovery. Nashville dancer and choreographer Rachel Marie Miller draws upon her roots in contemporary modern dance and a decade of ballroom experience to explore the intersection of these two worlds. Through shifting axes, dynamic contrasts, and the interplay of structure and freedom, this solo work investigates how the rich traditions and movement language of tango can inspire and expand contemporary expression. Bold, playful, and unexpected, Tango Unbound celebrates the beauty of tradition and the endless possibilities of movement.”

“ The essence of this project is in its name, corps de lies, translating to ‘body of lees’, lees being the dead yeast and grape fragments that sink to the bottom during fermentation. We can generalize this to ‘body of dregs’— this project attempts to invert the relationship between circus, artist and apparatus, with the performer in the role of the dregs, a sediment of what has been used up and transformed by the apparatus, an expression in which the artist is performed by rope. The works title plays on and complicates the French term for aerial rope, corde lisse.”

Garage Collective is a Nashville, TN, based movement group co-founded in 2022 by freelance dance artists Kristen Carrara, McKay House, Emma Morrison, & Amanda Reichert. Their performances range from contact improvisation to theatrical embodiment and various forms of contemporary dance and floorwork, and they’ve performed in collaboration with local musicians at Nelson Drum Shop, Soft Junk, The Blue Room/Third Man Records, Zeitgeist Gallery, and the Nashville Pantheon. Their more recent work has been performed at OZ Arts, COOP gallery, Backstage, the Barbershop Theater, the Pilot Light Knoxville, Chattanooga Noise Night, and the Asheville Fringe Festival. by @backstagepresents
