Back to the Flax is a design collective of eleven students from Design Academy Eindhoven, part of Kazerne Young.
Each member brings a unique background and personal approach to working with flax, revealing the many stories and possibilities of this ancient material. 2/3  What are we doing?

On a 1,000 m² plot of land in Gijzenrooi, we cultivated, harvested, and processed flax entirely by hand - exploring both traditional and experimental techniques.
Flax, once a staple in European daily life, has gradually faded out of sight. We know it from the seeds in our morning yoghurt or as linen.
However, there is untapped potential as a sustainable and circular material waiting to be explored. In Back to the Flax, we go back to the roots and reintroduce flax into modern contexts. From the ground up. Understanding the material from different perspectives, in all different phases. Through research and material experiments, it seeks to demonstrate a wider range of potential applications. How do we work?

We work by building a community that understands and appreciates where materials come from. Our approach is rooted in locality, connection, and hands-on agricultural practice. We bring people together to explore flax as a material. Making the process fun, sensory, and engaging through sound, taste, touch, and interactive workshops.
By placing flax at the centre of our activities, we create experiences that reconnect people with their environment and with each other. DDW 2026 Designers: Back to the Flax | The Hitch Collection

From crop to fibre, rope and bond

Back to the Flax explores how locally grown flax can once again become part of our everyday lives by transforming it into rope and inventive design objects. This sixth edition focuses on one of the oldest techniques: rope-making and knotting. A rope derives its strength from individual strands of fibre coming together. Taking this idea as their starting point, each of the collective’s ten designers created an object designed to carry: a bag, basket or other form, made from locally grown flax. Each object bears the distinct signature of its maker. Together, these material self-portraits form a collective portrait. The next step is to explore how natural fibres and traditional craftsmanship can provide a sustainable foundation for future design.

Back to the Flax is a design collective of ten students from Design Academy Eindhoven, taking part in Kazerne Young for the third year. On a 1,000-square-metre plot in Gijzenrooi in Eindhoven, the collective grows, harvests and processes flax in collaboration with the local community and other partners. Traditional knowledge and experimental techniques come together throughout the process, with each designer contributing their own background and approach. Through workshops and hands-on participation, Back to the Flax is breathing new, sustainable life into local flax cultivation, craftsmanship and the broader production chain.
