Backyard birding couldn’t get any better, than at @olaulimbackyards. From the monsoon star, Indian Pitta, to the spirited songs of Magpie Robin, everyone was there. 🌸

Somewhere, where Mhadei flowed gently, we saw two wire-tailed swallows diving down to the water, circling it, and then settling upwards. If you squint, you can see the swallows’ white bellies in the middle of the rocks. by @backyardbirdgeek

Sri Lanka was a dream, and then some more.

1. Sri Lanka jungle fowl
2. Spot-billed pelican
3. Serpent eagle
4. Darter
5. A ‘muster’ of painted storks, who, as I learnt, live in large numbers for safety
6. The very lucky sighting of a pied cuckoo, right where we were having coffee
7. Absolutely beautiful capture of white-throated kingfisher by @dtrighatia
8. This Sri Lankan hornbill came for a moment and then flew away
9. Dawn sighting of common kingfisher
10. The very camouflaged and beautiful orange-breasted green pigeon
11. At first i thought these were jungle babblers, but their calls didn’t match what I am used to hearing. Turns out, these are yellow-billed babblers

13. This nightjar was roosting (?) right on the road
14. This barbet kept calling out for while food in mouth. Were they calling for someone?
15. Shikra
16. Stork-billed kingfisher; their calls are so different from the white-throated kingfisher that I am used to!

18. The highlight of Wilpattu were bee-eaters. For the first time, I observed them catching insects up close, the way they make a go for it with their beaks open, and come back at the same spot only to try again.

The gulls of San Francisco were fearless enough for even the non-birder me to take notice.

Watching Voicemails for Isabelle, which is as much a charming rom-com as a love letter to SF, I was reminded of the misty time this city landed me a job i didn’t know i needed.

Some more beauties from Vienna, this time the theme is water birds and crow family!(?)

1. The truly mute, mute swam
2. The bird i kept misidentifying as raven but was of course a carrion crow.
3. Eurasian jay, only recently i have learnt that jays are part of Corvidae family

The one bird, who greeted me to Vienna and then never left my side was the Eurasian Blackbird. They were everywhere, making every possible sound. Yes, they can mimic other birds and many a times made me think that maybe a kingfisher or warbler was around but no, it was the good ol’ blackbird. by @backyardbirdgeek
