New England Aster is a native wildflower that grows up to 5 feet tall. It produces vibrant purple, pink, or lavender flowers with yellow centers from late summer through November.
This aster thrives in full sun or partial shade, likes damp prairies, and is a nice choice in native plant gardens. Its flowers tend to close at night, showcasing its natural circadian rhythm, known as nyctinasty. These late season flowers provide vital food for Monarch butterflies migrating as well as bees and other insects preparing for fall. You can temporarily add this to a pot for beautiful Autumn front porch decor, instead of a sterile and non-native traditional mum. From an ecological standpoint, mums offer no nutritional value to native pollinators, and can disrupt natural food webs. Purchase a New England Aster from a native plant sale or vendor to support your local small businesses!

one of the best things I ever did was planting this native garden. It will forever be my happy place. We had just bought our house, then I got pregnant, then covid hit. Very wild year! No regrets. I will never tire of pretty native flowers, bushes, and trees that serve wonderful ecological purposes.

For real!
And I always think I will every year when my cup plant gets like 9-10’ tall! But nope, I never do.
If you can manage it- cup plant is a good one for the back of the garden. It’s normally about 6’ tall but gets close to 10 in mine because whatever soil it’s in over here is perfect. It blooms in July/August, lots of butterflies like it as it’s up so high. And birds love the seeds. It has HUGE dark green leaves that literally are like bowls (cups). After it rains they will hold the water which attracts birds and other thirsty creatures. I usually see goldfinches eating the seeds then grabbing a drink.

Yes. Immeasurably so. The knowledge I’ve developed, the respect for our beautiful native Missouri flora and fauna, and the delight I’ve experienced with my kids is completely worth it. I’m sure every gardener would say the same!!!!

Autumn is such a beautiful time of year. I know it is in my garden! Most people are focusing on cleaning up their yards, tidying up their gardens and removing leaves from everywhere. Putting down ‘fertilizer’ for turf grass seed, and spraying profusely for insects etc. so many native insects, plants, and really our various native ecosystems as a whole are affected terribly by the good ol’ fall cleanup. We have to remember to tidy up for fall without destroying other things in the process!

It’s incredible to me that the monarch population this year has increased by 64%. I love when they’re here, always bittersweet to see them fly away from the garden. They are so delicate, and face so many obstacles. It’s nothing short of miraculous that they are able to make it all the way to Mexico. Hummingbirds too. And the bees preparing for the winter. Such small fragile creatures, insects and birds. The least we can do is be kind to them and help them out with native plantings, as their habitats and food sources are constantly being destroyed.

It’s marvelous to me all the variety of Aster colors! Haven’t felt well the past couple days, and it’s been raining here in KC since Tuesday. Hoping to get out in the garden tomorrow to take a walk.

i will say, “im going to the garden real quick” but it turns into half an hour… there is so much to see, so many pictures I want to take, even though it is the same thing over and over. The garden is marvelous, right now my camera is filled with Asters and goldenrods, monarchs, birds and bees!
I think one of my favorite things is knowing that since it’s full of natives, it will keep blooming all the way until November!
