THE NEW YORKER // My film @bacon_n_laces is now available on @newyorkermag for public viewing // I first met John on a location scout for a short narrative I was shooting with @ja_vasco (James Rodrigues). After wrapping on our overnight shoot, where I candidly watched John and his boys do their normal routine at the diner, I knew I had to come back and turn the camera on this family. For around two years, James and I would source a car and drag my gear over to Jersey and follow John’s life without any interference - we simply asked questions and pointed our lenses. What really resonated with me was their ability to adapt to the situation life dealt them. My own dad had a disability so my interactions and relationship with him had to be adjusted from what you might see as the typical father/son dynamic. Also, my dad was from Jersey so that dry sarcastic humor brought me right back to poker nights in my childhood kitchen. I thought maybe there were others like me who might relate to a blue collar family with a few quirks. And so Bacon ‘N’ Laces was born - John, a single father with three boys, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. Happy Father’s Day and this one is for you pops. Miss you. A huge hug to the people who made this all possible. These individuals are so insanely talent and I couldn’t ask for a better group to share this story with. In "Bacon N' Laces" the film follows the story of John, a blind single dad of three boys who manages a diner. Director and Editor of the film Stephen Michael Simon believed in the film so much that he didn't have his main subject John sign a release form until the film was close to completion. I spoke with Stephen about what it takes to see a passion project all the way through to the finish line. YELLOW SPRINGS // What a great way to end the @bacon_n_laces festival circuit by screening at the first annual @ysfilmfest that is run by my buddies and cohorts @eric_mahoney_ and @ianjacobs - not to mention screening in a block with @stevezahn (White Lotus anyone?) and academy award-winner Steve Bognar. Absolutely nuts. Everyone’s funniest musician @sordociego (Fred Armisen) came for a few talks and @raekwon exec produced a killer feature directed by @caniskovich - I think it’s safe to say I’ll be seeing Yellow Springs next year! by @bacon_n_laces
BACON ‘N’ LACES // For The Wall // After 30+ festivals, 15 awards, acquisition by @newyorkermag and a staff pick by @vimeo, it looks like @bacon_n_laces finally takes a breather. Thank you to @jordan.mov for putting together the final poster. This film first came to fruition in 2016 and it’s wild to see where it has gone. Thank you to the audiences who truly kept this film chugging along. And, and this is the biggest part, none of it was remotely possible without the following list of incredible people. YELLOW SPRINGS // You read it right, people. My short film @bacon_n_laces is a part of @ysfilmfest and will be sharing a shorts block with Emmy nominated @stevezahn ! Get ready for a very confusing Steve Q & A as we have yet another Steve (Bognar) in the block as well! We also got @sordociego and @raekwon in the house so expect a crazy little weekend in Yellow Springs. Major shout out to @eric_mahoney_ and @ianjacobs for putting together such a stellar fest. by @bacon_n_laces
STAFF PICK // Every filmmaker wants to get Vimeo’s stamp of approval. It’s a badge of pride. I’m very happy to say we now have those laurels. Personally, it’s a first and I couldn’t be more honored. Thanks to everyone who worked on the film - this accolade is for you as well - for the excellence presented in this work. And, thank you to @newyorkermag for showcasing. We will be back soon @vimeo :) Directed by Stephen Michael Simon Produced by @ja_vasco Cinematography & Editing by Stephen Michael Simon Additional Photography by @ja_vasco Animations by @jordan.mov Sound Editing/Design/Re-Recording by @benlehou Music by @mosssmusic @chrispetrosino @parrispierce @garybardizbanian @semblancesounds Thank you Bendix Diner, the Diakakis family, the Rodrigues family and @skautobot From The New Yorker team: Executive Producer Soo-Jeong Kang Producer @melissamfk Associate Producer @devonmarlie by @bacon_n_laces
BACON ‘N’ LACES // The festival run for @bacon_n_laces has officially come to an end after a nation-wide tour, over a dozen awards and acquisition by @newyorkermag for an online article + release on Father’s Day of 2022. My producer @ja_vasco and I had stumbled upon our subject, John during a location scout for a comedy piece back in 2016. That random meeting began our journey to pack up gear, drive to Jersey and follow around this incredible family for over two years. After another two years of post in which we got to play with some incredible music pieces from producers @chrispetrosino @parrispierce @mosssmusic @garybardizbanian @semblancesounds the film was ready for the world. This was my directorial debut in the doc space and I assure you it will not be the last. To everyone who has watched, shared and gave their two cents - thank you thank you thank you. by @bacon_n_laces
NITEHAWK // Thank you to @nitehawkcinema for including @bacon_n_laces in your shorts festival. This was the final NYC festival screening in BNL’s year-long run and quite possibly the final festival of them all. We were honored to screen at the opening night party with some powerhouse filmmakers. Thanks to you all for making it a special one. And hey… even @joepera liked it! by @bacon_n_laces
SEDONA // Director’s Choice Best Indie-Spirit Award // What better way to close out @bacon_n_laces 13 month festival run than an award at the prestigious @sedonafilmfestival ? Thank you to the members, filmmakers and community for making this one for the books. Also - this is dedicated to the Sedona Police Department for giving me a speeding ticket. We will never forget you 💕😎 by @bacon_n_laces
