Some of the ‘Bacteria Babies’ grown throughout the project in Vienna and Pula with over 60 participants taking part. Each sheet is grown through fermentation and then is dried into a usable material. Along with the successful growth of bacterial cellulose, ‘Bacteria Babies’ celebrates the fact that, in addition to new sustainable and eco-friendly materials with yet unexplored properties, it is also possible to cultivate the spirit of DIY and foster active engagement and collaboration in one’s own community.

🦠 Last February, we presented the exhibition Bacteria Babies: Sip & See at @kontejner_org ‘s gallery space in Zagreb, Croatia.

Bacteria Babies is an installation made of bacterial cellulose, the result of an experimental research-artistic project conducted in 2023 in Vienna (AT) and Pula (HR) in collaboration with more than 60 participants. These participants welcomed ‘bacteria babies’ into their homes, workplaces, and institutions, caring for them with varying degrees of success. The project’s focus lies at the intersection of decentralised and collective production of bio-material bacterial cellulose and experimentation with its material properties. Opening the project to external participants introduced numerous unforeseen situations, raised new questions, revealed the interests, knowledge, and fears of the community, and contributed to the interpretative richness of the project. In other words, the task that initially seemed simple began unravelling as complex and intricate layers of interdependencies.

🧫👼🧫 INTERVJU: Katja Banović i Xavier Madden, autori izložbe Bacteria Babies: Babinje koju otvaramo DANAS u 19 sati u KONTEJNER-u, Odranska 1/1.

“Riječ je o eksperimentalnom projektu s ciljem uzgoja bio-materijala”, govore. Izraz “bakterijska beba”, odnosi se, kako tumače na uradisam “kitove” za uzgoj bio-materijala koji su podijeljeni sudionicima kako bi ih čuvali u prostorima poput vlastitih domova, ureda, kafića i barova te muzeja. Domaćini su tijekom te akcije svjedočili transformaciji sastojaka smočnice poput povrća, octa ili šećera u bio-materijal potpuno novih svojstava s raznolikim mogućnostima buduće primjene.

“Smatrali smo da je naziv ‘beba‘ prigodan jer su sudionici zaista udomili bakterije, brinuli o njima i pratili njihov rast i razvoj. Takva terminologija doprinijela je, nadamo se, i destigmatizaciji riječi ‘bakterija‘, koja je uz viruse oduvijek imala lošu reputaciju, a naročito nakon pandemije COVID-a-19. Međutim, neke bakterije su zaista korisne i dobre za nas!”. poručuju.

🧫👼🧫 Okupljanja i proslave povodom Babinja tradicionalno su zamišljeni kao prilika za uzvanike da upoznaju novorođene bebe, pa se izložba poigrava tom tradicijom kako bi publici predstavila novorođenu bakterijsku celulozu. LED svjetiljke u instalaciji omogućavaju posjetiteljima da pažljivo prouče razlike i sličnosti između svake bebe, a digitalni arhiv prikazuje gradove (Pulu i Beč) kao decentralizirane tvornice, ističući važnost sudjelovanja lokalne zajednice i civilnog društva.

Obzirom da će se na otvorenju izložbe zainteresiranim udomiteljima podijeliti baby kombuche, na ovaj način se Zagreb ima priliku priključiti Puli i Beču kao novo mjesto proizvodnje bio-materijala.

🧫👼🧫 Sip and See parties are traditionally conceived as an opportunity for invitees to meet new-born babies, so the exhibition plays with this tradition to introduce the new-born bacterial cellulose to the audience. LED lamps allow visitors to closely inspect the differences and similarities of each “baby”, while a digital archive reveals the individual cities (Pula and Vienna) as decentralized factories, emphasizing the grassroots participation of the community.

Considering that baby kombucha will be distributed to interested foster parents at the opening of the exhibition, in this way Zagreb has the opportunity to join Pula and Vienna as a new location for the production of bio-materials.

🧫👼🧫 At the opening of the Bacteria Babies: Sip & See exhibition on Thursday, February 15. at 7 p.m. in KONTEJNER, artists Katja Banović and Xavier Madden will hold a guided tour and distribute baby kombucha to those interested in adoption.

Throughout 2023, the authors collaborated with over 60 participants in Pula (HR) and Vienna (AT) with the aim of pushing the material’s growing conditions to their limits. The initial goal was to pose two questions: Firstly, can bacteria cellulose become localized through the use of ingredients for the starting culture? Secondly, can it grow in urban and dynamic spaces such as offices, clubs, or galleries, and if so, to what extent?

🧫👼🧫 Katja Banović (HR/AT) and Xavier Madden (AU/AT) are architects and designers based in Vienna, Austria and Pula, Croatia. As a collective their work focuses on performative structures with social and material implications, which has expanded their interest in the production and use of bio-materials within urban centres. Some of their previous experiences include work within research projects such as Co-Corporeality, as well as the completion of their own projects and installations across Europe, North America and Australia.

🧫👼🧫 Pozivamo vas da nam se pridružite na otvorenju izložbe Katje Banović & Xaviera Maddena ‘Bacteria Babies’ u četvrtak, 15. veljače 2024. u 19 sati u Odranskoj 1/1.

Predstavit ćemo instalaciju od bakterijske celuloze koju su autori mjesecima uzgajali u Puli i Beču u suradnji s lokalnom zajednicom. Svoj će rad predstaviti sami umjetnici uz vodstvo, a istom prilikom će se odviti i akcija usvajanja baby kombucha na koju vas pozivamo da nam se pridružite u što većem broju.

Izložba je otvorena do 24. veljače 2024. godine i može se posjetiti u radno vrijeme KONTEJNER-a: pon–pet 16–20h, sub 11 – 15h.

Rad je realiziran u sklopu KONTEJNER-ove produkcijske platforme UradiSam_ARTLAB unutar Future DiverCities EU projekta.

We are presenting an installation made of bacterial cellulose, which the authors cultivated for months in Pula and Vienna in collaboration with the local community. Dried examples of the bacteria cellulose produced from different recipes!
Testing the material quality through the use of granulated sugar and then dying it with fruit or vegitable, or producing the sheets only through the natural sugars found in those very same fruits and vegitables. The growth, therefore the thickness of the material therefore varies between shown examples.

After being fermented and grown in its tank for some time, the cellulose goes through the process of drying after which it is ready to be used as a sheet of material. These examples show the materials potential for future production through interaction with rigid structures, layering systems or threading the sheets into larger units.

Get your very own growing kit delivered to you! Fill out the form on the website or directly contact us and take part in the experiment by growing a Bacteria Baby at your space!

Growing Kits are the main infrastructure for the communal production of Bacteria Babies. They contain all the basic ingredients such as Mother Culture (AKA Scoby) , filtered water, sugar, vinegar , tea for caffeine, and finally a high glucose/fructose fruit or vegetable (locally sourced).
After a month or two the Growing Kit will be collected along with all the documentation (pictures, anecdotes, and any impressions) and the sheets will be dried in preparation for the cellulose catalogue at the final exhibition, where each of your Bacteria Babies tells a different story!

Prijavi se za dostavu svog seta za uzgoj! Ispuni formu na web stranici ili nas direktno kontaktiraj i postani dio eksperimenta uzgajajući vlastitu Bacteria Baby u svom prostoru!

Setovi za uzgoj su glavna infrastruktura za proces komunalne produkcije Bacteria Babies. Sastoje se od svih bazičnih elemenata kao što je ''Mother Culture'' (AKA ''Scoby''), filtrirana voda, šećer, čaj zbog kofeina, i finalno visokoglukozno ili fruktozno voće/povrće lokalnog uzgoja.

① Get in touch and adopt your Bacteria Baby!
② We will deliver a Growing Kit (see the post or visit the website for more information). It contains all the necessary ingredients for your Bacteria Baby to grow. Upon delivery we will take a family photo and collect some basic information on the space.
③ Store your Bacteria Baby anywhere, and watch it grow!
④ After 1-2 months we will come back to collect the Growing Kit in order to dry the sheet and prepare it for the exhibition.

☆ We are always at your disposal for any questions before or during the process! ☆
