Summer of cycling 2.0 by @bad.ideas.tom

In loving memory of Coach Bill Schnier (1944–2025)
University of Cincinnati Head Cross Country & Track & Field Coach, 1980–2013.

My favorite memory might be the photo of Coach on the sideline recruiting me in high school. I’ll never forget the letters he wrote and the visit he made to my home, sitting down with my parents to share his vision for me running for his team. Little did I know that saying “yes” to him would become one of the most formative decisions of my life.

I’ll never forget my freshman track season, when things weren’t going the way I hoped. Coach pulled me aside and told me, “You’re a slow starter, but a fast finisher. Things might not be where you want them now, but you’ve always found a way to get there in the end.” Those words carried me through that grueling season—and have proven true far beyond the track.

I’ll never forget the joy on his face my senior year, when I finally put together a strong and healthy 10K race.

And I’ll never forget when he went out of his way to tell me I made the right choice running in the conference championship meet despite being injured. I didn’t know he even realized I’d been wrestling with the decision, but he affirmed me in a way that soothed mean lifted my spirits, reminding me that we're competitors, when we have a chance to compete, we take it.

Most of all, I admired how levelheaded Coach was. No matter how poor things were going, he never lost sight of the bigger picture. He had a steadiness about him that’s rare—and a wisdom I find myself appreciating more with each passing year.

Rest easy, Coach. Thank you for believing in me, guiding me, and teaching me lessons that will last a lifetime. You finished well. by @bad.ideas.tom
