“BEAT OF DESTINY: THE FASCINATING REASON WHY ONLY ORPHANS CAN PLAY THE SATO DRUM”

In the heart of Nigeria, there exists a majestic instrument that embodies the rich cultural heritage of its people. The Sato drum, standing approximately three meters high, is an imposing figure that resonates with the rhythmic beats of tradition. As one of the largest drums in the membranophone category, the Sato drum is a marvel of craftsmanship and cultural significance.

The Sato drums hold a revered position in Akarakunmo’s cultural heritage, typically played during momentous occasions, particularly the burials of esteemed and elderly individuals. The traditional drumming ritual is steeped in custom and symbolism.

The main custodians of the Sato drum’s tradition are the descendants of Kodjo, Avidagba, and Tosavi, the legendary founders of the communities in Agbokomeh, Lokossa, and Dadapame (now known as Wheaga). These communities have safeguarded the traditions surrounding the Sato drum, ensuring its continued relevance in modern times.

This towering instrument comes in two forms: male and female, sometimes displaying hermaphroditic attributes in a striking manner. This unique characteristic underscores the drum’s role as a symbol of unity and balance. The Sato drum’s imposing presence is matched only by the richness of its cultural heritage. To play the Sato drums, performers must wear a traditional attire, synchronizing their movements with the drum’s rhythmic beats. As they play, they execute acrobatic leaps and displays, adding a dynamic visual element to the performance.

Interestingly, the privilege of playing the Sato drums is reserved exclusively for orphans. The tradition dictates that an orphan who has lost one parent may only use one hand to play the drum, while an orphan who has lost both parents may use both hands.

The community allows only orphans to play the drums, providing them with a sense of belonging, while excluding those with living parents, emphasizing the tradition’s cultural significance.”

Tinubu Sends Three Executive Bills to House of Reps for Consideration

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted three executive bills to the House of Representatives, proposing major changes to drug law enforcement, transport safety investigations and public service training.

The bills, dated October 12, 2026, were conveyed in separate letters read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary on Thursday.

The first bill seeks to repeal existing laws governing the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and introduce a consolidated legal framework to strengthen the fight against drug cultivation, trafficking and related offences.

The second proposes amendments to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) Act, expanding the agency’s mandate beyond aviation to include rail, maritime and other transport-related accidents and incidents.

The third bill seeks to replace the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) with a National School of Government, Nigeria, focused on leadership development, policy implementation and capacity building for public officials.

Tinubu urged lawmakers to give the proposed legislation expeditious consideration.

The bills will now undergo legislative scrutiny and must receive the necessary approvals before any of the proposed changes can become law.

Happy Posthumous Birthday to the one and only Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Baba 70. ❤️🎺

Fela was never one to keep quiet when he had something to say. Whether through his music or his words, he spoke his mind, challenged authority and left a mark that time has yet to erase.

This throwback to the 1990 Badagry Black Music Festival takes us back to when the Afrobeat legend brought his unmistakable energy to Badagry. And as expected, Baba 70 was in his element, speaking his mind in a way only Fela could.

Some men leave songs behind. Fela left a whole movement.

Rest on, Abami Eda. Your music still speaks. 🕊️🎶

LAWMA to Install Surveillance Cameras Across Lagos to Curb Illegal Waste Dumping

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is planning to install surveillance cameras at strategic locations across Lagos State as part of efforts to strengthen environmental monitoring and tackle illegal waste disposal.

The initiative is expected to help authorities monitor areas where residents and businesses improperly dump refuse, identify offenders and improve compliance with the state’s environmental regulations.

The move also aims to discourage indiscriminate dumping on roadsides, medians, drainage channels and other unauthorised locations, which can contribute to blocked drains, flooding and environmental pollution.

With improved monitoring, LAWMA hopes to promote responsible waste disposal and support efforts to keep Lagos cleaner and healthier for residents.

Residents are encouraged to use approved waste collection services and designated disposal points rather than dumping refuse indiscriminately.
