The first one to remember.

Last Friday was the very first time ISA MAI played live and what a way to start. We loved seeing this new project finally come to life and already can’t wait to hear where they take it next.

Ishfaq opened and closed the night behind the decks, with ISA MAI live somewhere beautifully in between.

Thank you Zagreb Music Week and Zagreb Design Week for having us, and most of all, thank you to everyone who came, listened and supported. ❤️

ISA MAI — LIVE DEBUT

ZEST at Zagreb Music Week🛎

As part of Zagreb Design Week, the second edition of Zagreb Music Week brings together musicians, organizations, spaces, technology, education and audiences through a shared music and cultural platform.

After presenting DJ Foxy at Zagreb Music Week last year, this year ZEST introduces ISA MAI - a new Zagreb-based trio making their very first appearance in front of an audience.

Born out of a long friendship and a shared love of music, ISA MAI blend neo-soul, jazz, hip-hop, bass music and electronics, driven by synths and sprinkled with sweet pop elements.

ISA MAI are:
Iskra Maroja - vocals
Ishfaq - synths
Crni - drums

ISHFAQ — DJ SET

Before ISA MAI make their live debut, Ishfaq opens the evening with a solo DJ set.

Ishfaq is a DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist and live performer, based in Zagreb. He's supported Bugz in the Attic live in Dublin, played the legendary Lazy club in Frankfurt, remixed for Tokyo Dawn, produced and remixed for Sonar Kollektiv, and released on many labels including Village Live and Dance Regular, attended the Red Bull Music Academy in Seattle, and DJ'd all across Europe. He's also an accomplished session musician, having contributed to many releases, for people like Zero T, Bruk Rogers, EVM128, Jan Kincl, The North Quarter — and recently playing all the instruments on the Searchlight album, released on Goldie's Fallen Tree 1Hundred label.

Music That Moves You!

At this point in the history of underground dance music, a full album release that hangs together as more than just a collection of standalone tunes is painfully rare. A most precious thing to be cherished. I can never really know what Sam Mahoney as Ishfaq, had in mind for this sublime long player, but I do know what he’s achieved with it. From the very first digital spin, the care and artistry with which he’s conceived, assembled and sequenced this set is plain to hear. The confident rhythms, unctuous bass lines and delicate keys cleverly connect one tune to the next, resulting in an all-enveloping warmth to ease all but the most troubled soul. Where many albums rely upon the monotone contrast of light and shade for their impact - Ishfaq opts instead to blend rich, earthy hues to create a spiritual flow for the listener rather than dramatic tension. Just as the impressionist painter fuses deft strokes of complimentary colours to give meaning, this album fuses complimentary sounds. Running counter to the contemporary penchant for dipping in and out of a recording artist’s work, Looking South is a set that truly deserves to be listened to in its entirety - preferably somewhere in the darkness. Pure unabashed joy - the best return on an investment of an hour of my life for a very, very, long time.
