Bågar & Glas: The Stockholm Optician That Refuses to Treat Eyewear as a Disposable Product @bagarglas

In an industry obsessed with new releases, faster distribution and endless expansion, Stockholm’s Bågar & Glas has built its reputation around something less fashionable: taking its time.

Founded in 1982 in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, Bågar & Glas began as a small store with an ambitious idea: glasses should be treated as identity, not merely as accessories.

More than four decades later, the company operates two Stockholm locations, its original Gamla Stan store on Kornhamnstorg and a second address on Norrlandsgatan, alongside an online shop. But its real value cannot be measured by the number of stores it operates.

Bågar & Glas has built what many independent opticians are currently struggling to create: a clear reason to exist.

Its portfolio combines recognised names such as AHLEM, Jacques Marie Mage, DITA, Matsuda and Kuboraum with more specialist labels including Sato, KameManNen, Yellows Plus, Lazare Studio and Paloceras. The selection is broad.

The company’s philosophy is equally visible in its clinical services. Eye examinations, specialist eye-health checks, dry-eye treatments and orthokeratology sit beside frame styling and luxury eyewear. This is important. Bågar & Glas does not attempt to escape the medical side of opticianry in order to appear fashionable. It makes expertise part of the luxury.

Then there is the workshop.

Located beneath the Gamla Stan store, the in-house workshop allows the company to fit lenses, adjust frames and perform repairs under its own control. Customers are encouraged to maintain and repair their eyewear instead of replacing it at the first sign of damage.

Inside a Paris apartment, two lovers move through the different moods of a single day: morning rituals, stolen glances, silence, friction, humour and reconciliation. Echoes of Love unfolds like a film in five acts, allowing tenderness and tension to exist side by side.

Founded by Paris-born designer Ahlem Manai-Platt, AHLEM approaches eyewear through the language of art, architecture and human character. Every frame is reduced to its most essential lines – designed not to compete with the person wearing it, but to reveal them.

Precise without feeling rigid. Expressive without becoming theatrical. Eyewear made to quietly witness a life.

AHLEM FW26 | ECHOES OF LOVE

Two people. Two frames. One story moving between tension and tenderness.

She wears St Marcel – a cultivated, rounded optical frame sculpted from 8 mm cotton-flower acetate, with raw-cut bevels and finely balanced proportions.

He wears Houdon – a square optical shape with cut corners that sharpen its lines into graphic territory. Bold colours, including deep green and petrol blue, add authority to its distinctive architectural silhouette.

Together, the two frames capture the central idea behind Echoes of Love: contrasting personalities, individual expressions and the quiet connection between them.

Designed by Ahlem Manai-Platt and handcrafted in France, each frame is created to reveal the wearer rather than overpower them.

A rounded optical frame, pared back to reveal its essential qualities: balanced, cultured and quietly intelligent.

St Marcel is sculpted from substantial 8 mm cotton-flower acetate, yet feels refined and effortless on the face. Custom raw-cut bevels along the temples introduce depth and catch the light, while hardware finished in 22k gold brings warmth to its precise construction.

Part of Echoes of Love – AHLEM’s cinematic Fall/Winter 2026 collection, created around the tension, tenderness and intimacy shared between two people over the course of a day.
