I Remember When… Community Round Table
On October 22, The Black Archives, in collaboration with the 100 Black Men of South Florida, hosted a special community round table celebrating the history and legacy of Liberty Square.

We were honored to have Bea Hines and Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, among many Liberty City pioneers, share their memories and experiences.
Our elders are living archives, and their stories deserve to be preserved for generations to come! 🖤

Today was special at the Black Archives!

While working in our collections, we discovered birthday cards addressed to our founder, Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields, from family members dating back to the 1990s. It was especially touching to find a card from her mother, along with one from her aunt and uncle, Dr. Samuel H. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson was an X-ray physician who generously donated his former clinic to the Black Archives for preservation. Finding these cards gave us a beautiful glimpse into the personal life and family connections of our founder.

To make the day even more meaningful, Dr. Fields had the opportunity to meet our Fall 2026 interns, who are continuing the important work of preserving Miami’s Black history.

Moments like these remind us that archives preserve more than documents. They preserve family stories, relationships, and legacies for future generations. #Blackhistory365 #Miamihistory by @bahltsoflo

It was a pleasure having the NAACP Youth & College Division at the Black Archives! We discussed Miami’s Black History & the importance of Voting . We gave them a treat by showing them our NAACP Crisis Magazines from 1979 from our NAACP collection. #blackhistory365 #naacp #history #miamihistory by @bahltsoflo

Last night, South Florida PBS was proud to participate as a presenting partner alongside The Black Archives for a meaningful evening at the Historic Lyric Theater.

The program began with a screening of Declarations: Black Americans and the Revolutionary War, a production of VPM, followed by a thought-provoking conversation examining continuities between early battles over liberty and contemporary issues affecting Black communities in Overtown, Liberty City and across Miami.

Thank you to the distinguished panelists Dr. Valerie Lyles Patterson, Valencia Gunder, and David D. Bynes and moderator Kamila E. Pritchett for sharing their knowledge and perspectives.

We are also grateful to The Black Archives and everyone who joined us for this important community conversation, presented as part of America250 programming.
