How to Register Your Business in Ontario

Spent more time picking a business name than actually registering it?

Last week a client told me he had been “researching” registration for 3 months… and selling under her personal name in the meantime. he wasn’t lazy he was overwhelmed by choices.

So we did it together in one sitting: picked the right structure, registered, and set him up to collect HST when he needs to (not before). He left saying, “I didn’t know it could be this simple.”

What we walk clients through:
• Choose a structure (sole prop vs. corporation—what fits today and 12 months out)
• Name search + registration
• Get a CRA Business Number (BN) and register HST when you’re approaching the $30k taxable-sales threshold
• Open business banking (keep personal out)

QuickBooks was supposed to save me time why am I spending weekends fixing it?
That’s what a founder told me last week. She had set up QBO herself, connected the bank, and hoped for the best. Three months later: mystery balances, duplicate expenses, and a P&L that didn’t match the bank.

We sat down, made a few small changes, and everything clicked:

Profit ≠ Cash, and that’s normal.
