Traces of the Past: Migration and the Search for Identity

In her work Traces of the Past, the artist explores the physical and emotional journey of migration. The piece symbolizes the story of a family’s movement from the Balkans to Istanbul, then to Europe, and finally back to Istanbul. As children of migration, the artist uses art as a means of searching for identity and origins.

The figures made of materials such as coal and iron represent the hardships, fragility, and reconstruction associated with migration. Coal symbolizes the uncertainty at the beginning of the journey, the lost roots, and the internal pain, while iron stands for the enduring marks of the past and the strong identities carried by migrants.

The artist portrays each phase of the migration journey in both concrete and abstract terms. At every step, we encounter traces of trauma and symbols of rebirth. The work confronts the viewer with the challenges and identity crises of migration while also emphasizing the power of hope and resilience.

Traces of the Past is not merely a migration story; it is a guiding journey that helps us understand our roots, our identity, and our search for belonging. This work reveals that migration is not only a physical movement from one place to another, but also a long and demanding journey of the soul.

Forgotten Goddess

This sculpture carries the traces of a body that has endured through time — an echo of mythological silence. Its rough surface reflects a memory where fragility and strength intertwine. Neither complete nor broken; it exists in a constant state of becoming, much like existence itself.

The work invites the viewer into a quiet dialogue between the past and the present. #sanat #art #sculpture_art #heykelsanatı #çamur #contemporarysculptures #claysculptures #artlovers by @bahriyegulerart
