Vaughan lifts Rising Sun past Perryville in back-and-forth softball battle

Rising Sun answered Perryville’s comeback with another late surge Wednesday, breaking a seventh-inning tie to earn a 9-6 victory in a back-and-forth softball matchup.

The Tigers struck first and did it in a hurry, sending five runs across in the top of the first inning. Bailey Vaughan opened the scoring with an RBI single, Emma Bare followed with a two-run hit, Emma McBride added another run-scoring single, and Adrienne Secor capped the rally with a sacrifice fly as Rising Sun grabbed early control.

Perryville did not stay quiet for long.

The Panthers battled back and moved in front 6-5 in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a pair of Rising Sun errors while continuing to put pressure on the bases and at the plate. Gabby Reinhart set the tone from the leadoff spot, finishing with three hits, while Taegan Spier and Taylor McGuirk each added two hits. Saphira Hamill and Lani Rando each drove in a run for Perryville, which collected nine hits and drew seven walks.

Rising Sun answered in the fourth. Carsyn Godwin brought home the tying run with a groundout, knotting the score at 6-6 and setting the stage for the late finish.

That finish belonged to Vaughan.
With the game tied in the top of the seventh, Vaughan came through with a two-run single to put the Tigers back in front. Secor followed with a productive line out that brought home another run, giving Rising Sun the breathing room it needed at 9-6.
Vaughan finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Rising Sun’s 11-hit attack. Kaelyn Burton added two hits, while Leah Felty, Bare, McBride, Gemma Brand and Secor each contributed key offensive moments in a balanced Tigers lineup.

After Perryville’s six-run response in the third, Rising Sun got a strong effort in relief from Bare, who settled the game down over the final four innings. Bare allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out four to earn the win. Felty started for the Tigers and worked the first three innings.

Spier went the distance for Perryville and kept the Panthers within striking distance throughout, but Rising Sun’s late execution made the difference. by @bailey.v21
