Justice Phillip Matthew Diamond 🕊️

His last Facebook post read:

“If you’re going to the NO Kings Protest please protect each other, don’t let anything happen to the people you love”

And his last text to me was:

“How is your family doing?”

That’s who he was. No matter how sick or down in life he got, he always wanted the best for his people, and for communities near and far, both interpersonally and politically.

Justice was popular, and not in an artificial high school movie way. People just liked him, and for good reason. It wasn’t hard for him to make friends, and he was one to try to make sure everyone got along. He sought to mitigate drama. He wanted to understand everyone’s perspectives. He made people feel seen and heard.

At one point though, when push came to shove and there was a choice to make that had the potential to divide a friend group, he stood with me during a particularly vulnerable time. He recognized my pain and honored it, even though it wasn’t the socially popular choice to do so. His friendship was essential to my recovery from a terrible situation, and for that, I will always be grateful.

Justice and I talked about human relationships, culture, politics, and just about anything else that came to our minds. We had a verbal agreement for a “marriage pact,” that if neither of us had found luck in love by the time we got to a certain age, we’d get married to keep each other company and enjoy the tax benefits. I really did think we’d both find our people, and I was rooting for it.

I’d give just about anything to talk with Justice one more time, or send one more blanket, or laugh at one more meme. I’m far from the only one. by @baileyroseboyle

According to the scholarly research, the average person makes around 70 conscious decisions every day, and over 30,000 subconscious ones.

Skeptics of marriage frame this union as one permanent choice, or one choice for which reversal is likely too consequential to be worth making in the first place. This is where my thinking was when you first asked me to marry you. By then, though, I had shaken the skepticism, and was enthusiastic to assume that risk. I’m not one for gambling, but this was the one bet I was ready to throw in all my chips for.

In this last year, I’ve found that the “one choice” framework is a misunderstanding of what marriage is, or can be. Definitionally, marriage is a noun. In function, it’s a verb.

Marriage is every time you fulfill your obligation to do the dishes, per your vows, and every time I pick up the cups you’ve left on the various surfaces around our apartment.

Marriage is “I put it on the calendar.”

Marriage is “no, it’s NOT fine, and I’m going to make it up to you.”

Marriage is “I got you more of those jerky sticks from the farmer’s market. They’re in the fridge.”

It’s fist bumps and headbutts and shoulder rubs. It’s gracefully admitting when you’re right, and trying not to gloat (and failing) when I’m right. It’s setting up a password manager for the first time because you said I should and I believe you.

Some of these choices are more conscious than others. Every single one of them is what our marriage is made of.

The choices we make now impact each other in more profound ways than they had prior to formalizing our relationship with the state of Illinois. The trust and confidence we have bestowed upon each other are heavy and sacred and beautiful. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

A year ago today, we mutually decided to walk down the aisle. You will always be my best decision.

♥︎, your wifey

This is your reminder that any public amenity you enjoy is a direct result of community organizing and policy that serves the public good. There are places all around you that prove that this is possible. Let’s continue working together to make that happen.
