COME TO LORETO. EXPERIENCE IT. HELP US PROTECT IT.

Earlier this year, Loreto in the Gulf of California, Mexico, faced a major threat when it was designated as an international deep-sea port, potentially opening the door to international maritime traffic and higher-impact navigation within one of the most extraordinary marine ecosystems on our planet.

The international deep-sea port designation was revoked. It was an important victory — but the work is not over.

We are now waiting for a new legal instrument to regulate large-vessel and international maritime navigation in Loreto, as well as the long-awaited update of the Loreto Bay National Park Management Program.

These decisions will be fundamental in determining how this protected area is managed and safeguarded for the future.

And this is why we still need your help.

Loreto is not simply a beautiful landscape. These waters are habitat, feeding grounds, migratory routes and refuges for whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, seabirds and countless other species.

Protecting Loreto also means changing the way we travel.

At Baja Adventures, we believe in regenerative tourism: small groups, low-impact expeditions, environmental education and citizen science.

When you join one of our expeditions, you don’t simply come to observe wildlife. You become part of the effort to understand and protect it.

Our expeditions help us spend more days in the field, collect wildlife data, document changes in species distribution and contribute to photo-identification and long-term monitoring.

Travel can take from a place — or it can give something back.

Join a regenerative tourism expedition in Loreto, support our conservation work, share our campaign and help us continue advocating for strong, transparent and science-based protection for this National Park.

The deep-sea port designation was revoked. Now we need to make sure that what comes next truly protects Loreto.

Come not simply to see this place, but to become part of its protection.

June 23rd brought another magical encounter in Loreto Bay National Park.

Today we observed a calm Mobula birostris feeding near the surface on dense concentrations of zooplankton.

These gentle giants filter tiny drifting organisms from the water and play an important role in the ecology of productive marine ecosystems.

After feeding, manta rays are often seen resting or slowly cruising near the surface, taking advantage of favorable currents. While beautiful to observe, this behavior also makes them particularly vulnerable to vessel strikes. Fast-moving boats can cause severe injuries or mortality, especially when mantas are difficult to detect in surface waters.

As one of the world’s largest rays, Mobula birostris is classified as Endangered. Their slow reproductive rate typically producing only a single pup after a lengthy gestation means populations recover very slowly from human-caused impacts.

Every manta encounter is a reminder that responsible navigation, reduced vessel speeds in wildlife areas, and effective marine conservation are essential to ensuring these magnificent animals continue to thrive in Loreto.

MEET THE HUMANS BEHIND YOUR ADVENTURES

We’re Regi & Leo! A Spanish woman and a Mexican man born and raised on the Baja California Peninsula. Explorers, life partners, and the owners behind Baja Adventures.

From designing our expedition boat “La Puma” and 4x4 van “La Cachalote” to creating itineraries, guiding expeditions, and often handling your reservations, we’re personally involved in almost every detail.

Behind every expedition (and often your reservation emails!) are real humans, not robots, a small team who genuinely love what they do.

But there’s a story behind it all.

Centuries after the Spanish first arrived in Baja, another Spaniard came along… only this time, instead of conquering anything, she fell in love with a local and his wild peninsula!

Leo founded Baja Adventures in 2015, while Regi was running her own expedition company. Our paths crossed during an expedition in 2018, beginning a friendship that turned into love in 2022.

That same year, we brought our two worlds together, combining years of experience exploring Baja’s oceans, islands, deserts, and mountains, and leading expeditions.

Two explorers, one shared vision.

In 2025, we got engaged aboard our expedition boat “La Puma” sorrounded by Orcas, and in 2026, we married in Loreto, the place we proudly call home.

Today, Baja Adventures is much more than a business. It’s our life project, built with years of experience, endless curiosity, and a shared love for exploration, wildlife conservation, and citizen science.

And when we’re not exploring? You’ll probably find us with our three very spoiled dogs, who are very much part of our little family!

That’s why we don’t call you guests. You’re participants. Part of our discoveries, adventures, and a growing community connected by curiosity and respect for the natural world.

Because for us, Baja Adventures isn’t just what we do. It’s how we’ve chosen to live.

Thank you for sharing our curiosity, our love for the wild, and our commitment to protecting it.

With love from Loreto,
Regi @regi_domingo & Leo @leopoldo_sanmiguel

A little eye. A giant perspective.

Behind this eye is a brain capable of navigating thousands of kilometers, recognizing its surroundings, and navigating a complex social world.

Gray whales remind us that intelligence comes in many forms, and curiosity isn’t exclusively human.

What happens when the observer becomes the observed?

Join our #CitizenScience whale expeditions this next winter 2027 from Loreto in Baja California Sur and discover these extraordinary mammals from a different perspective.

Some sails are made to catch the wind.
Others are made to cut through the blue.

The sail of a sailfish rises like a flag from another world, a wild one.

Another moment reminding us that beneath Loreto’s surface, there is always more than we can see.

Those famous blue feet can tell us much more than you might imagine.

Blue-footed Boobies (Sula nebouxii) are deeply connected to the productivity of the ocean. Their foot coloration can change with nutritional condition, their reproductive success responds to food availability, and scientists have even studied their breeding ecology as an indicator of changes in populations of schooling fish.

Even within a family, life follows the ocean: when food becomes scarce, competition between chicks increases, allowing parents to concentrate limited resources on the offspring most likely to survive.

So when we stop to observe Blue-footed Boobies during our Marine Adventures in Loreto, we’re not simply checking another species off a list. We’re looking at another piece of the marine ecosystem.

Birders and wildlife photographers, let us know you’re coming. We love slowing down for seabirds, behavior and those incredible moments happening above the water too.

Because understanding Loreto Bay National Park means looking below the surface, and above it.
