Cutting apprentice Emilly joined the Baja team in 2023 and is currently training in the Baja signature cutting method and styling under Angela & Jay. Born and raised in Coachella Valley, CA, the chill Cali girl vibes was a kismet fit with Baja. Before pivoting career directions, Emilly worked as a hostess at Michelin star restaurant Cosme and later worked front of house at highly sought after Sophie Pavitt skincare. These combined experiences give her a high taste level of client experience and a desire to master her craft with weekly models in the salon. Emilly is inspired by natural beauty in her personal life and in nature as food and medicine. Having naturally curly hair and low maintenance lifestyle, lived-in effortless textured haircuts and educating her clients on working with what they have are her specialty.

Hi NYC, Angela here 🙋🏽‍♀️
I started Baja Studio back in 2019 with not a super clear intention except that I wanted to work in a boutique studio that felt experiential and diverse for myself, my team and clients. I always said you should relax and feel like you’re in my home. I grew up in Riverside, California about an hour east of LA. I am first generation Mexican-American, aka Chicana and my dad’s immigrant experience has really shaped how I view dreams, goals and work ethic. I craved to live in LA and I absolutely loved every opportunity to go as a kid. So I did. I joined a theatre program at Cal Arts and discovered I was not a good actress but I loved the production of the characters. Growing up in the 90’s I had a deep obsession with super models and fashion shows. I used to watch them on VH1, Kate Moss & Naomi Campbell were my everything! Somehow this all naturally led me to NYC shortly after graduating beauty school. I’m so grateful to have had incredible training and mentors along the way from all the greats. Hairdressing and living in NYC has been a blessing in my life. I have and will always love it.

Creating this studio has been nothing short of the hardest and rewarding thing I’ve done with my life next to becoming a mother. I hold this space and my team dear to my heart and I hope you feel that when you’re here.

•I had a real estate license and worked as a mortgage broker in the early 2000’s
•While I was in hair school, I was a makeup artist first. My dream was to be a MAC counter mua originally by @bajastudio

@j_styleshair has been serving vibes and haircuts at Baja since 2019. Born and raised in Guatemala, Jay moved to NYC when he was 14 years old. Started his hair journey at Arrojo Academy and assisted in some of downtown’s best salons before intensely working with Angela and becoming Baja’s first trained stylist. He has an immaculate sense of personal style which is found in his work across the board but especially in his love for short haircuts. Bardot bangs, bits and shags are his signature cuts. On any given day you can find Jay in the studio decked in his own creations from his custom hats, belts, self tailored fits & vintage jewelry.

When you sit down with Jay, consult’s are long & through. “Im inspired by the process of constant growth, learning new things about my clients helps me understand them better. I love knowing that my work contributes to making people feel more confident in themselves and exploring their own personal image.”

Fun Fact
-Jay owns 70+ pairs of custom designed boots from Guatemala. From cow Hyde, snake skin to fish scales. We’re obsessed with Jay’s style!
-Jay is the oldest of 5 sisters. Hair was his playground and destiny taken in Baja Studio by @bajastudio

Malcolm Cuthbert ~ Colorist ~

Specialty: Blondes and Rainbow 🌈

IYKYK could sum it up but for those that don’t. Born and raised in Crown Heights, Brooklyn with Trinidadian roots, Malcolm brings artistry to everything he touches. Starting at the ripe age of 14 years old learning braids and loc’s, a craft he still hones, Malcolm approaches hair like a canvas — shaping transformations that feel authentic, not forced. A 25 year veteran, Malcolm has worked for the greats and his work has been featured in media from Vogue to Allure and hailed as one of NYC’s best colorist in @curbed
Deeply curious and forever evolving, Malcolm finds inspiration in people, culture, and the pursuit of freedom through self expression.

-Aside from color, Malcolm is well versed in wig making, styling and has been present backstage for fashion week globally and on set for fashion editorials
-Driven to create a life he desires. Currently working on building his real estate portfolio, he just finished renovating his first home! by @bajastudio
