Xenia Creative Retreat welcomes Jon Baker from the 6th to the 27th of October 2025.

London-based artist, Jon (b.1977) primarily makes images of the body using mediums such as photography, camera building, painting and drawing.

He has many influences that include outdated psychological and cultural theories, British parody comics, toilet humour, puppets, 1980s British pornography, conspiracy theories, masculinity, children's toys, children's drawings, x-rays, scientific enhancements of the body, mermen, parenthood and jelly faces

His work is large, colourful and often grotesque; the surfaces of the work are frequently moist, dirty and flesh-like. Jon examines the boundaries of cultural taste, politeness and acceptability.

Jon studied for a BA in Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Arts (2014). He has exhibited at Wonzimer Gallery, Los Angeles (2024), Viable Gallery Istanbul (2022), OHSH Projects (2021), and the Serpentine Gallery (2019).

Jon was selected for the Catlin Arts Prize (2015) and received the Parasol Unit Exposure Award (2014). He had a solo exhibition called “Mess Package” at Somers Gallery (2022).

Jon co-curated the show Liquify, Peckham 24/OHSH Projects, London (2024).

The artist @libby_heaney_ asked me to “Entangle” with her in her recent newsletter!

@libby_heaney_ is a Quantum information scientist. She is widely known as the first artist to work with quantum computing as a functioning artistic medium.  So what is Quantum computing you ask? As I understand it, it’s the theory (and almost practice?) that we can use incredibly powerful computers that could answer any question we ask such as how can we make clean energy or how do we build engines that travel at lightspeed or what is the funniest joke?

Libby has an augmented reality sculpture in the sculpture garden at Frieze this year. See the last picture

Ent- (non-earthly delights) (2024) is a large-scale sculptural installation and augmented reality (AR) experience which highlights the transformative potential of our forthcoming quantum future.

Thank you Libby for asking me! Swipe through for the questions and answers. by @bakerbang

Held | Watercolor, Oil pastel, Pencil | 30 x 22.5 inches, 76.2 x 57.1 cm

‘Held’ shows two men in an intimate and painful martial arts chokehold called a ‘Guillotine’. The choke crushes the windpipe stopping the opponent breathing. ‘Held’ continues my interest in depicting a see-through figure, showing the connections of limbs and organs highlighting the vulnerabilities in the body. The image is made by layering pools of pigment and then thick lines of oil pastel. by @bakerbang

Alongside my photographic work, I have been developing watercolour drawings. They are made by layering pools of pigment, creating an effect that appears as if you are peering through the body like an X-ray

One of the drawings I am showing “Got Balls” depicts a person who has giant testicles. The title relates to a person who has shown courage or daring. The drawing takes this positive affirmation and enlarges it out of control, referencing body horror and the grotesque!

I am proud to be included in the show TASTE, a collection of works on paper by excellent artists. Thank you to @ohshprojects for curating and to @wonzimer their impressive gallery.

Presented by OHSH Projects and Wönzimer, the exhibition will be a taste of the British art scene, a cross-section of the artists we have exhibited since our first exhibition three years ago.

The exhibition will include work by twenty-five OHSH exhibitors alongside five Wönzimer exhibitors, each of whom present a unique vision at differing stages of their careers, and we are incredibly excited to share the full list of exhibiting artists:

Here are the install photos from 'Liquify', an exhibition of photography I co-curated with @ohshprojects for @peckham24.

This show has been a satisfying culmination of things I've been thinking for a long time about the wide ranging purposes of photographing bodies. I've taken photographs for many years and in different styles and realms (art, fashion, documentary, low-fi and Hi-def etc.) and in many ways it's been how I navigate through the world. These artists are brought together from different contexts to show the medium's scope and experimental possibilities.

Many thanks to Henry and Sophia for having me - and to the wonderful artists involved, I'm really proud of the show.

And thank you to @rosiegibbens for gifting me the @kroll.eric picture from which the show was born!

Liquify is an  exhibition about how people record the body using experimental photographic techniques, co-curated by Jon Baker. The artists in the exhibition expand the medium by incorporating processes including assemblage, photomontage, painting, digital manipulation or by playing with image quality. Bodies are stretched, remixed and transformed.

I co-curated a show with @ohshprojects
𝙇𝙄𝙌𝙐𝙄𝙁𝙔 opens tonight 8 May, 6 - 9 pm

𝙇𝙄𝙌𝙐𝙄𝙁𝙔, co-curated by Jon Baker and OHSH Projects, is a show about how people record the body using experimental photographic techniques. The artists in the exhibition expand the medium by incorporating processes including assemblage, photomontage, painting, digital manipulation or by playing with image quality. Bodies are stretched, remixed and transformed.

The works are created for different purposes whether documentary, medical, galleries, fetish or fashion magazines. These contexts cross-contaminate each other showing
photography as a culturally relevant medium with a huge scope for experimentation and evolution.

𝙇𝙄𝙌𝙐𝙄𝙁𝙔 will also be open for @peckham24photo - the free weekend festival that champions new voices in contemporary photography, which will have a special late opening on Friday 17th May from 6pm - midnight.

The 8th Edition of Peckham 24 will explore photography’s multi-layered relationship to history through the curatorial theme, BACK TO THE FUTURE. The artistic programme will bring together diverse perspectives that blend the past, the present and the future via the lens of history. Exhibitions and events will showcase the work of innovative lens-based artists reflecting on themes of memory and personal histories, as well as the work of artists who take moments from the past as inspiration to re-stage, re-imagine or re-think existing narratives.
