I haven’t been thrilled with wigs UNTIL NOW.

The previous wigs I have bought have looked fine but there was always something not quite right with how they feel - even the expensive one I got at a proper wig shop. Over time I realised it was too big for my head so it moved a lot and was very itchy.
So after speaking to people online about the things you should look for in a wig one name kept coming up…

@prettylittlewigs_byhollie provides very realistic, modern hair systems that are pretty much made to measure. I visited Holly in December with one colour in mind that I had seen on their website and instantly fell in love. I tried on about ten different pieces and narrowed it down to five I loved.
I decided on Rosie in a size XS length 22-24” with a density of 150. I lot less hair than I used to have (in terms of thickness) but definitely an improvement on what I have now 🤣

She sits on my head comfortably, with no gaping or slipping. No glue required, just pop on and go. She’s made from real human hair so I can wash and style her however I choose. I can also tuck her behind my ears!!!

I have my next four already decided on…

I wanted to make a video like this once I had put eyelashes and a bit of make up on but simply could not wait.

“When your hair started falling out is there anything you wish the people around you knew to help and support you through it?”

That’s a deep one.

And one I can answer with hindsight.

I wish people didn’t just brush it off and say “it’ll grow back” and “how are your stress levels”.

Don’t we all wish we had zero stress? But it’s not proven to cause Alopecia Areata - which is an autoimmune condition.

And saying “it’ll just grow back” is like saying you have the winners lottery numbers…. It’s extremely unlikely.

And I don’t say these things to be mean, I say them with the knowledge I have gained over the past couple of years from my own experiences and from other Alopecians. We know you want us to believe everything is gonna be ok, because you want it to be all ok, but sometimes life looks differently to how we expected it to look… sometimes our hair falls out and never grows back even when we find a way to live our lives with minimal stress.

And if we have a little regrowth please respond based on how we react to it. I have a few hairs that grow but my hair has never grown back. And when I showed my mum she was really excited about it, and said maybe it’s growing back!! I knew it wasn’t. And now, I don’t want it to unless there’s that guarantee it’ll never leave again.

My friends and family were great when I was experiencing hair loss.
But if you are at the beginning of the journey with someone you love whose hair may be falling out, consider how your expectations make that person feel. Listen to them instead of trying to fix them.

“What do you wish people knew about alopecia?”

GREAT QUESTION!
One I would love the community to get involved in… comment below what you wish people knew!

My number one is I wish people knew it’s not cancer.
I find it extremely uncomfortable when people ask me ‘how I am doing with it all’ with that tone in their voice, or they pray for me.

I wish people knew not to try and give us advice if they haven’t ever experienced it. It’s exhausting and not all Alopecians want their hair back.

I wish people knew a lot of us would only want our hair back if there’s a guarantee that it won’t fall out again. But there’s not.

I wish people knew alopecia is an autoimmune condition, which rarely come alone. I was tested for Celiacs disease because there’s a high proportion of Alopecians who are allergic to gluten. Can you imagine if they told me I was?!?

On The Big Island we were excited to see the black sand at Punalu’u Beach and it was incredible 🖤

Just a couple of days before the island saw the winds and rain of Hurricane Nolo, it was a bit breezy but still beautifully warm. And we saw sea turtles there too 😍

“Do you ever get upset about it?”

Yes.

In the beginning it was way worse, because everything was out of my control and I had to learn how to face my new physical identity. Every day was really difficult because everyday there was more clumps of hair gone, another eyelash would fall out, another part of my feminine identity was leaving.
But actually, it took me a while, but I realised that whilst hair is associated with femininity, it doesn’t define it. So many other parts of us are what make us feminine like our smiles and our nurturing qualities.
But it’s still hurtful when someone says “you look like a dude”. And the times when you want to get dressed up and go out with the girls but when you look in the mirror and something is missing and in your head you tell yourself you’ll never look as beautiful as they do.

Over the short time I have been a bald woman, I have told myself I have something those other people don’t have - especially the name callers - I have wider perspective of beauty and my kindness and empathy have grown. But that doesn’t always mean I apply it to myself as often as I should. And I’m only human, and while not as often, do still get upset every now and then about my hair loss.
