The Yin and Yang of witches

Widely referred to as the "Goddess of Pop", Cher has been credited by critics with establishing a template of theatrical, provocative, genre-fluid female pop performance, and her elaborate concert productions have influenced stadium-scale pop touring. Ryan Murphy said "it was Cher who turned transformation into an art form", adding that without her, "there might be no Madonna as we know her, no Prince, either". Cher's early solo songs address subjects then largely absent from American popular music, including divorce, prostitution and racism; Billboard has credited her with developing an androgynous musical identity that predated and informed the work of David Bowie and Patti Smith.

After joining rock band ‘Fleetwood Mac’ in 1974, Stevie Nicks began to prove to the world that she was not going to settle for second best. Her original songs ‘Rhiannon’ and ‘Landslide’ featured on the band’s tenth studio album which has aged to become one of the best albums of all time. ‘Rhiannon’ was named one of the ‘500 Greatest Songs of All Time’ by Rolling Stone magazine, spurring Nicks into a new era of discovering her self-image and proving that she could dominate a sexist and primarily masculine field as an extremely successful female rock star. Above all, Nicks has a captivating voice with astounding live vocals which uplift the audience, almost radiating her ethereal personality with every note. Her incredibly powerful voice pushed ‘Rumours’ to a new level, establishing her as a truly vital member of the band, with arguably the strongest and most unique voice of the 1970s.

The poets Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen at the Newport Folk Festival in 1967.

A few days after Leonard passed away Joan Baez shared these words.

"Bless Leonard Cohen. I met him in 1961, a mysterious, dark and gloomy, gifted songwriter, in the lobby of the notorious, dingy 60s-atmospheric pot and poetry Chelsea Hotel. Someone was throwing up in the phone booth. I was a newbie to it all.

Over the decades, from the Village to the stage to the seclusion of a monastery, to his own seclusion, he gave us much of his wisdom and beauty in magnificent poetry and song.

Hallelujah."

The last slide showcases a letter written from Baez to Cohen, expressing her admiration for the singer's track "I'm Your Man".

The Master of my Soul. This recording is my favourite live performance by him because of the comedic start to it. I will forever love you.

Leonard Norman Cohen was a Canadian songwriter, singer, poet, and novelist. Themes commonly explored throughout his work include faith and mortality, isolation and depression, betrayal and redemption, social and political conflict, sexual and romantic love, desire, regret, and loss. He was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. In 2011, he received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize. In 2023, Rolling Stone magazine named Cohen the 103rd-greatest singer of all time.

Cohen pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s, and did not begin a music career until 1966. His first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967), was followed by three more albums of folk music: Songs from a Room (1969), Songs of Love and Hate (1971) and New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974). His 1977 record Death of a Ladies' Man, co-written and produced by Phil Spector, was a move away from Cohen's previous minimalist sound.

.
.
Isabelle Anne Madeleine Huppert is a French actress who has appeared in more than 120 feature films, mostly in starring roles. Regarded as one of the most respected actresses in French cinema, she has appeared in films directed by Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard and Michael Haneke. She has also starred in numerous stage productions, in Paris and around the world.

The Piano Teacher (French: La Pianiste, lit. 'The (Female) Pianist') is a 2001 erotic psychological drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke, based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Elfriede Jelinek. It tells the story of an unmarried piano teacher (Isabelle Huppert) at a Vienna conservatory, living with her mother (Annie Girardot) in a state of emotional and sexual disequilibrium, who enters into a sadomasochistic relationship with her student (Benoît Magimel). The film was a co-production between France and Austria. Haneke was given the opportunity to direct after previous attempts to adapt the novel by filmmakers Valie Export and Paulus Manker failed for financial reasons.
