What a ride this has been, last week to view “Chips off the Old Block” at Odds and Ends gallery with my guy Scott Sueme.

When I got the opportunity to show work in Hong Kong, my place of birth. I wanted to take the chance to reintroduce myself. Often I find myself admiring the work but overlook the artist’s story and their journey. Being a private person where I struggle to talk about myself to others. I used “Chips off the Old Block” to let you take a peek inside into my world and learn about who I am before the artist. Each piece represents a memory, an inspiration, a significant moment in time, a tradition and perhaps a discovery. It’s truly been quite a journey. I am so glad you got to see and in some way be part of this. by @ballandcup

“Have you eaten yet?” Is often a way my parents asking how I was doing and engage in conversation. Chinese daikon and carrot soup has always been a regular in my moms kitchen. I wasn’t much for the daikon because it has this mild bitter taste, but the snow carrots were always my favourite. I remember biting into the soft mushy sweet texture. It always felt comforting. Through the years my mom would include bits of these goodness in all the broths that were mandatory to have.

“Fukaura” is a piece about my childhood comfort food. No matter how Ma Fan my mom would get, every time I bite into these carrots I would think about my mom’s cooking. by @ballandcup

“Typhoon Views” on view in my upcoming exhibition “Chips off the Old Block”

This piece was inspired by my grandma who always encouraged me to think free. When my family applied to move to Canada in the late 80’s, my grandma could not come with us. My mom wanted to stay in Hong Kong to be with her but my grandma was adamant that we should move for my future. She told me “I was too special to live an ordinary life.” That was the last time I had seen her.

One of my favourite memories was helping her tape X’s on our windows during typhoon season. I remember looking up in the dark sky through the window and seeing little rain drops against the glass.

On view from Dec 5 - Jan 28 at @oae.gallery Frères et Sœurs are a small peak into my series of work in my upcoming exhibition “Chips off the Old Block” alongside with my studio mate and long time friend @scottsueme. During the preparation for the show, I had thought a lot about the sacrifices my family/ancestors had made and the risks they took in order for my sister and I to have the opportunities for the life they dreamt of us living. Words are not my strong suit but its such a honour for me to open up to tell my story through my work. Each piece represents a small moment, a flashback or something very meaningful to me. I hope you enjoy. by @ballandcup
