The Embassy of the Baltic Sea is forming! In a time where transformation of societies is necessary to live in harmony with Nature, the voices of more-than-human beings needs to be heard in decision-making spaces.

VISION: Interconnected wellbeing of human society and nature in the Baltic Sea bioregion, through recognition of the rights of the sea to thrive and evolve.

MISSION: a laboratory of care
🌊Representation: a space for practising representation of more-than-human voices of the Baltic Sea watershed.

🌊Collaboration: a space for dialogue between actors at all levels, from a mutual viewpoint of respect for the rights of the Baltic Sea.

🌊Action: a space for developing concrete examples of integrating human flourishing with the whole living community in the Baltic Sea bioregion.

We gather people around questions like: ❓what does the sea want? ❓what would the herring say? ❓ how do you belong to the sea?❓

Can an ecosystem be forgiving?

We met with awardwinning author @mygindjohanne who has written about how her grandfather was complicit in ecocide through dumping polluted waste in the sea. When she heard @pellathiel saying that the sea might forgive us, and feed us again, it really struck a chord.

We have participated in the conference 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 at @himmelbjerggaarden in Denmark, a nordic first, with participants from Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, UK, Norway and certainly more.

Both the time and the space for the event are significant. The conference opened on Constitution Day, June 4th, at Himmelbjerget (“Sky mountain” 😆) which carries a powerful democratic legacy. At the time of the development of the first Danish Constitution, adopted 1849, open meetings attracting thousands of people were held here. Constitution Day is still celebrated every year.

In the 21st century, the democratic system dreamed up almost 200 years ago is falling apart. That is what systems do when they don´t respect the principles that govern them... When the reality is that humanity is embedded in and dependent on a living whole, comprising many voices, society cannot govern itself solely from the interests of one species. The people, 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘴, must be extended to include more-than-human voices.

Hosting organisation @earthways.academy has for three years held a 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲 to develop these ideas, and the conference was followed by a fourth Assembly. The conference offered a rich tapestry of keynote presentations, facilitated co-creative conversations, ritual space, exercises in more-than-human governance and delicious food. The Embassy of the Baltic Sea held a workshop on regenerative diplomacy, and it was a treat to go in depth together!

How come the oceans are in such a bad shape, despite decades of research, policy development and engagement from civil society?

Well, maybe because we treat them as something separate from us: a space to extract from, divide, control, and exploit.

The theme for this year's #WorldOceanDay is “Reimagine: Beyond the world we know. A new relationship with our Ocean.” This invitation could not be more urgent.

In order to reimagine our relationship with the Ocean, we must move beyond the world we know and transform how we view and value the Ocean. Ocean Rights do just that!

On Sunday, we will be at Nature's Constitutional Assembly at Himmelsbjerget, Denmark to develop our work on Regenerative diplomacy.

The purpose of Nature’s Constitutional Assembly, hosted by Earthways, is to explore and experience how we can create a democratic foundation for our society in which nature is given a voice, space, and rights that can be anchored in the constitution.

The place carries democratic legacy; Himmelsbjerget was the site for democratic deliberation in the 19th century, with regular meetings attended by 1000s of people. In a time of ecological collapse, we have to develop our governance systems by expanding our view of the demos - the people - to include the more-than-human peoples when we make decisions. How else can we govern ourselves with dignity and grace in a complex, living reality? A lot of bridge-building to do!

May 22nd - Global Day of Biodiversity 🩵🌊🦋🐟🩵

Today we are in Copenhagen with @ambassadevdnoordzee in a ceremony joining the waters of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Facilitator Zara Waldebäck invited all the beings of Öresund and reminded us that we are water, we are drops in the ocean. Water does not know boundaries. It teaches us about flow, connection and healing. The sea is our original home, the source of life.

The conference Rights of Nature and the FutureofDemocracy, hosted by @earthwaysdk @jeppegraugaard seeks to create a necessary and courageous space for new thinking and doing — a place where academia, art, politics, activism and the animate world can meet to create a new path for our juridical and cultural understanding of nature. By bringing together actors from across the Nordic region, the conference aims to inspire a new democratic culture in which nature is no longer seen merely as a resource but as co-creator in the development society. @pellathiel from the Embassy of the Baltic Sea will be a keynote.
