Thomas Duhnke entró ayer en meta a las 19:45, con un tiempo de 5 días, 12 horas y 38 minutos. O lo que es lo mismo, a muy pocos minutos del cierre de Balutia. Habíamos salido a buscarle a la Plaza de España de Villanueva de Córdoba, y a su paso por la iglesia de San Miguel, se giró levemente ante nuestro saludo, pero no hizo amago de detenerse en ningún momento. El reloj no se iba a parar tampoco. Recibimos a Thomas en la meta final agotado, con una sonrisa que por momentos temblaba emocionada. Allí estaba también Rudy Vitek, un participante con quien compartió algunos kilómetros antes de su abandono el tercer día, y que le recibió con un abrazo, momento en el que el bueno de Thomas no pudo contener las lágrimas. Nos contaba cómo la temporada de nieve en su ciudad aún no le había permitido entrenar lo suficiente, y que llegaba muy justo de entrenamiento, pero convencido de que quería terminar Balutia. Nos sentimos afortunados de tener a ambos, Rudy y Thomas, participando en esta primera edición de Balutia. EN Thomas Duhnke crossed the finish line yesterday at 19:45, with a total time of 5 days, 12 hours and 38 minutes. In other words, just a few minutes before the official closure of Balutia. We had gone out to meet him at Plaza de España in Villanueva de Córdoba, and as he passed by the Church of San Miguel, he slightly turned at our greeting, but never once looked like stopping. The clock was not going to stop either. We welcomed Thomas at the finish line exhausted, wearing a smile that at times trembled with emotion. Waiting there was also Rudy Vitek, a participant with whom he had shared some kilometres before Rudy’s withdrawal on the third day. He greeted Thomas with a hug, and in that moment, good old Thomas could no longer hold back the tears. He told us how the snow season in his hometown had not yet allowed him to train properly, and that he arrived with very little preparation, but fully determined to finish Balutia. After a more than likely breakfast in the village of Conquista, we cross the Guadalmez River and leave Los Pedroches, in Córdoba, behind as we enter Ciudad Real. For a while, this first section can make you think you’re in Australia: wide tracks of sand and gravel in vivid orange, with huge eucalyptus trees lining the route on both sides. Although, instead of kangaroos, you’re far more likely to spot deer, wild boar and plenty of partridges here. From here, already in Castilla-La Mancha and crossing the La Garganta estate, riders enter the beautiful and equally remote Alcudia Valley. Este primer tramo, por momentos, te hace pensar que estás en Australia: pistas anchas de arena y gravilla de color naranja vivo, con enormes eucaliptos flanqueando el recorrido a ambos lados de la cuneta. Aunque, en lugar de canguros, lo más probable es que aquí veas ciervos, jabalíes y muchas perdices. Desde aquí, ya en tierras de Castilla-La Mancha y atravesando la finca de La Garganta, los ciclistas se adentrarán en el hermoso y también remoto Valle de Alcudia. An option for the more adventurous, and one that will also save you some of the hassle of getting there. Because there’s no better way to travel than by bike. 🚲 We’ve prepared different tracks to reach Balutia using quiet roads and avoiding dirt tracks as much as possible, so you can keep your bike clean and in perfect condition before the start. There are routes from different places, so you can start the adventure long before you reach Balutia. You can find all the tracks in a Ride with GPS collection on our profile.
