The Cranberry Capital of Oregon!

Did you know Bandon grows about 90% of Oregon’s cranberries?

The mild coastal climate gives local cranberries extra time to ripen, creating the deep red color that makes them especially valuable to juice producers like Ocean Spray, which uses Bandon berries to help give cranberry products their rich ruby color!

Bandon’s cranberry history dates back to 1885, and generations of local families continue the tradition today.

From the cranberry bogs to your table, Bandon’s cranberry industry is a big part of what makes our coastal community unique.

The Bandon area and surrounding South Coast communities produce approximately 90% of Oregon's cranberries!
And...
Oregon contributes roughly 7% of the nation's cranberry crop, making our little corner of the coast an important part of this American agricultural tradition.

Every fall, local growers bring in the harvest using a fascinating process: bogs are flooded, the berries are loosened from the vines, and the ripe red cranberries float to the surface, ready to be gathered!

The next time you think of Bandon, remember—we're not just a beautiful place to visit. We're also a community with a rich agricultural heritage!

Have you ever witnessed a cranberry harvest?

DID YOU KNOW?

Just south of Bandon is one of the Oregon Coast’s special natural treasures — the New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC)!

New River runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean, separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of sand.

The area’s estuary, wetlands, meadows, forests, and coastal shrublands provide important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including migratory birds and the threatened Western Snowy Plover.

Visitors can explore self-guided trails, enjoy wildlife viewing, go fishing or paddling, and stop by the Nature Center to learn more about this unique coastal environment.

Located just a short drive south of Bandon, New River is a beautiful reminder of how much natural wonder we have right in our own backyard.

Have you explored New River ACEC?

What’s your favorite thing to see or do there?
