Back when there was no ai nor smartphones , we used to have to listen to music on an iPod and write it out by hand— ignore heroes , but happy 100 to John Coltrane , JC the great: 'eres one of his saxophone improvisations from 1961 with the Miles Davis Quintet on Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't" that I've always loved pretty sure he plays the "Giant Steps" melody about midway thru . Always sounds like he's sort of fumbling soap in this era of his playing , searching for something with an inner burning desire that's ferocious but tender and perfectly imperfect , full of swerve and verve : and maybe even a little bit grotesque or horrific . Notes to student(s) :

- mono neon bassist

- modal interchange over a drone : john coltrane my favorite things

- resolving after tension

- playing a different scale over each chord vs. playing a single scale or mode that fits a particular chord sequence , aka "chord scale theory" : "stairway to heaven" guitar solo is the A aeolian scale for instance vs. a jazz soloist playing each dchord as its own tonality like "a night in tunisia" or any bebop songs

- highlighting different notes in relation to the "pentatonic equator" of a particular position as the chords change, like during a blues

- major blues scale over major mode chord progressions usually sounds amazing

- "campfire cowboy chords" are an important part of the guitar and its construction/tuning: they can also be used as compositional starting points-- a somewhat "tactile" way of composing-- you can also move campfire shapes around and adjust them if they sound too dissonant , like we did with the C# flat 5, 9 chord ...

- Becca Stevens quote about the guitar as a uniquely quotidian and transportable instrument, while also remaining extremely complex , "shreddy" and multi-layered.

work on those major pentatonic / major blues shapes and find a use for them over a progression if you can. by @banduncivilized

posted this "tune" last week — a Peruvian traditional melody heard on the streets of Cusco, Peru arranged for folk-jazz band — here's a different version recorded in 2011 @newschooljazz w @martinnevin upright , @ari__karason trumpet , and bff @colemanbartels on drums. ok lil back story here: i practiced the guitar for a few hours at home and couldn't remember how to play anything and my hands were failing me ... so i was gonna bail on the gig @thelinkandpin the day of, but couldn't let the bandmates @tobyhall228 & @mj_clamb
down (and YOLO) so this is the first tune of the set: unrehearsed, raw, droning vibes-- swamp new orleans electric miles davis w/ live ambient loops -- a "rendition" of a super deep old blues melody "i can't be satisified" originally recorded by muddy waters and revamped by the stones... (if you can wait till the end i play the melody) but i just said "let's do a new orleans vibe in G" and off we went ... grateful to be alive and making music xo audio&photo by @multitrack_max mastered by @tommiritello by @banduncivilized
